Closing
#1
Don't jump on me for this thread.
I can not understand why the Olympics closed with the "Who"?
There have been so many Super Groups from GB over the years
and still great new bands coming along from UK.
I have only heard a couple of songs the Who have done?
My G G G G Generation and Pin-Ball Wizard, yes?
Ok, just wondering , just doesn't seem right to me with all
that awesome talent in Great Britian.

i think The Who were a justified closing act...
after The Beatles(two of whom are dead),Rolling Stones(always arguements between mick and keith)..The Who are the UK's premier act of the last 50yrs, with possibly The Kinks coming in fourth and maybe Clapton also....
so,yes, The Who are worthy of the position as they also defined a whole generation in the 1960s...

unfortuantaly The Who always played second fiddle to the Beatles/Stones in the UK charts, Pete Townshend influenced as many future guitarists in rock and roll as Clapton,Paige,Hendrix, so he cant be overlooked...and he was also given the tag of "spokesman of the generation" for UK kids throughout the 60s/70s.
The Who,along with Ray Davies(kinks) and Paul Weller(the jam) were the major influences of the Brit Pop artists of the early 1990s(Blur,Oasis,Radiohead,Stone Roses etc etc).

strange thing is that with all their fans and great hits in the 1960s,70s and into the early 1980s that for some strange reason The Who never had a UK #1 hit single...my Generation only got to #2, their highest chart position.

I have to say that I thought the selection of songs for the closing was complete crap. And the sound was terrible. The vocals especially.
Lennon singing Imagine was ill conceived as well - I mean the verse they choose is 'Imagine there's no countries...' in the middle of the largest gathering of people from different countries you will ever see.
Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' turned into a limp-wristed performance. Don't even get me started about the Old Spice Girls - music at it's very worst. TT was just verbal diarrhea.
Don't get me wrong - the organization od the games was well executed. But they really need to look at the music they chose and who was chosen to sing/perform as well. That was bloody awful. The only two who made any sort of impact was Annie Lennox and the Welsh/English Choir. The rest was rubbish.

Oh MH,
yup I think most Brits like the Who,
but just saying, I don't think they were as popular in
other parts of the world as in UK.

Thanks Crazy-Horse, now I have a better understanding of the Who.
I do think the Beatles and Stones were more marketable around the
world with their music also the other awesome groups from UK.

Some tunes were great though, I can not dislike the Spice Girls,
just saying ,they are still awesome to me as were some other acts.

Crazy summed it up well as far as the Who goes! I missed them and also Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks (awesome song) !!!! When they passed the flags around between the dignatatries(Rogge, Johnson and the Rio mayor) I thought the music portion was over !!!!!...lol...stupido me. I'll try to catch it on YouTube. Overall the music up to that point was mediocre...would have liked the Gallaghers to unite for Oasis!!!! and yes Jerome The Welsh choir was fabulous!...no mention of The Rolling Stones !!!!...that's a shame !!!!!!

well SteveO....
Noel Gallagher was asked to perform,Paul Weller also....both declined, and both quintessentially British artists,as important to music in the UK as were The Who and Kinks IMO.

also read somewhere that Stones and Pink Floyd were also asked to perform...thinking maybe The Stones should have been there but theyd robably have to wheel Charlie Watts out in a wheelchair, maybe they'll do the paralypics LOL, PF, with the crap between Gilmour and Waters..there'd be more chance of a Beatles reunion i'd have thought!

i have not seen the closing ceremony as yet so i cannot comment on sound, song selection or of the artists who performed there.
