In terms of influence... I'd say the most influential rock bands would probably be Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, The Velvet Underground, etc. In regards to Maynard James Keenan being a great songwriter... Haha. I thought being a songwriter meant contributing instrumental parts too. All he does is write lyrics and sing in his unimpressive range... He rarely sings in a different key. That aside, he ruins his voice in the studio versions of Tool songs by overusing the paired vocal harmonies that are popular in music now (i.e. singing in a particular key then layering it with you singing in a higher octave). I also don't think having "hits" make you great. Alice in Chains isn't a great band; they rode on the coat tails of a fad and made big money for it. Then they diss Metallica (who are also failed musicians at this point) for cutting their hair. Ha.

As for rock bands... That depends on what you consider rock. I also don't really think I could put them in any particular order. My favorites, though, are King Crimson, The Mars Volta, Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, and ... I don't know. I can't really list anymore off of the top of my head that I feel are "favorites." I have many others that I like, though... Like The Melvins, The Birthday Party, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Tomahawk, etc. I love all of these bands and at times they may be closer to my favorites than the other four I listed.

I am confused what is considered rock here...are we only talking about godforsaken grunge "music" or we talking about classic rock, punk rock, and rock and roll? If it's the latter, then it has to be:
1. The Beatles - revolutionary
2. Led Zeppelin - Great music/guitarist/frontman, huge following, huge impact
3. Van Halen - greatest guitarist ever. Innovative. Great.
4. The Who - Amazing all around band, great drummer, great bassist, great songwriting, great for rock n' roll
5. The Clash - gave rise to punk, London Calling = sick album

Honorable Mentions:
Elvis Presley/Chuck Berry - fathers of rock n' roll
Jimi Hendrix - you can't talk about rock without Jimi
Nirvana - I don't think I've ever hated a band more, but I guess their influence is undeniable
Bruce Springsteen - wrote best rock song ever (Born to Run)

There are so many things wrong with the post above me, I don't really want to start.

I'm not going to list the greatest, I'm just going to list my favourites, and these will probably change pretty quickly.

1) The Beatles (real original)
2) Wilco
3) The Rolling Stones
4) The Grateful Dead
5) The Mars Volta

Yeah, making homophobic slurs makes you look VERY smart, underclass hero. Ha ha. *sarcasm* As for those bands sucking, you're one to talk. You listen to Good Charlotte, Sum 41, Green Day... Need I go on? By the way, I think you mean "except."
