Top 5 Rock Bands of All-Time - Kurt Staley - 30-04-2008
These are the bands that have 10-20 great songs in their arsenal. No one or two hit wonders here.
1. Alice In Chains- The greatest band from the Seattle grunge movement. They revolutionized rock and roll in the early to mid 90's with songs like: Nutshell, Down In A Hole, Would, Rooster, I Stay Away, Them Bones, Heaven Beside You, and the list goes on. Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell are brilliant musicians.
2. Tool- Contains one of the greatest song writers in James Maynard Keenan to ever live. Their style is very unique to the traditional sound, thus making them stand out. You can put them in a number of different rock genres as they are versatile. Songs like Sober, Schism, Stinkfist, 46and2, Parabola, Lateralus, Eulogy and the list goes on.
3. Days of The New- Ahh, my personal favorite. I LOVE Days of The New. Travis Meeks is a very good guitarist and lyricist. He also writes the songs, he does it all. All of the other members were in a band called Tantric who is also great. They are all from Charlestown, IN which is down the street from me. I know people who grew up with Travis. A lot of their songs deal with addiction. I don't just hear their music, I can feel it in me. Songs you guys might be interested in are: Bring Me Down, Shelf in The Room, Touch Peel and Stand, Whats Left For Me, Where I Stand, Weapons and Wounds, and many others. You must listen to them if you've never heard them. They changed my life.
4. Nirvana- Another life changer. Kurt Cobain, the guru of grunge rock. He was a very complex song writer. Every song has multiple meanings depending what you are going through at the time. Another great musician, Dave Grohl had a lot to do with the success of nirvana. They kicked off the grunge rock movement, which was perhaps the greatest era in the history of rock. Some of my favorites include: Pennyroyal Tea, Something In The Way, The old Bob Dylan remake; The Man Who Sold The World, Lithium, Come As You Are, Dumb, All Apologies and many more.
5. Pink Floyd- Although this band is in a completely different era than the bands above, they are definitely similiar in my opinion. They have a dark sound which I think is prevalent to being an elite rock band. Their first lead singer went out of his mind on acid, which is a shame because Syd Barret had a lot of potential. Either way they were good after him too. Some of my favorites are: Dark Side of The Moon, Time, Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Hey You, Comfortably Numb, Money, Wish You Were Here.

I'm not a huge fan of some of the bands you've mentioned, but like Alice in Chains' Unplugged album, and of course Nirvana goes without saying. Where our tastes seriously overlap is with Pink Floyd. I've loved their stuff for what seems like centuries now. The darkness you talk about is what puts a lot of people off the Floyd, but it's what has drawn me to their music.
I'm going to see Roger Waters doing Dark Side in London in a couple of weeks. Will report back.

Mine would be:
Pink Floyd: Roger Waters' brilliant lyrics combined with one of the most gifted guitarists on the planet, and the ability to write dazzling music is a winning combination.
Led Zeppelin: Lyrics sometimes a bit crap, but brilliant music combined with one of the most gifted guitarists on the planet, and a dynamic live show must have been a sight to behold.
Radiohead: Although some of their stuff can be a bit experimental, I've always thought they share a similar feel to the Floyd without sounding much like them. Going to see them live for the first time in a couple of months.
Pixies: The band that produced the blueprint that Nirvana emulated so successfully. A genuinely exciting band.
The Jesus & Mary Chain: Velvet Underground copyists with a volume dial that went to 11. Some of their albums are patchy, but JAMC at full throttle is a fearsome beast.

Yes Layne Staley died of a heroin overdose. I forgot to put that in past tense. I like some of Radioheads stuff, i.e. Optimistic, Karma Police, Everything in its Right Place, Creep, How to Disapear Completely.

Also if you've never heard of Days of the New I seriously consider you listen to them. Good starting songs would be: Bring Me Down, Touch Peel and Stand, Shelf in The Room.

of all time huh? i will base my answers on the influence/contribution of the bands to rock music. ok, here's mine:
1) Led Zeppelin - no explanation needed
2) Metallica - a lot of people will not agree with this but it still holds that they contributed a great deal to metal music before and even up to this day and they "were" kickass (once upon a time in the 80s), the newer stuff is lame
3) Nirvana - catapulted a new age of rock music during the 90s although i wouldn't consider their music something extra-ordinary. so i guess i am including them only because of their influence in rock music during their time. Come to think of it, maybe i should have given this spot to the pixies...
4) The Beatles - no explanation needed
5) velvet underground - no explanation needed although they didn't really sell a lot of albums

Had some time to spare, so I've been listening to clips from Allmusic. They sound quite interesting. Promoted to the Buy List.
Allmusic describe them as Grunge/Prog ?!
