Elvis, Beatles, or Michael Jackson.

1...I don't think he is less popular than The Beatles, the Presley Estate still re-package and re-release new Presley titles every year...

2...im a huge Presley fan, and when I read your post, I was hard pressed for about five seconds to remember the title of a Presley studio album that wasn't a soundtrack to a movie, I think Presley was known for his songs not albums overall

3...im sure that in the US you would hear Presley on the 'golden oldies', 'country', 'spiritual' stations, wouldn't you???

4...there are young people who know who Presley is because when I was at Graceland the visitors I saw were from ALL age groups...
and I'd be safe to say that of the 2 million people that visit Graceland every year probably half would be American...

Elvis is still hugely popular in the UK....

since 2000 45 Elvis singles have been re-issued over there..
4 have made it to the coverted #1 position on the singles chart
14 others have made the top10 and....
20 more singles have eaked in the top20...

one single that was remixed and used in a Nike Ad(I think it was Nike?!) was released as a single and made it to #1 in 6 Euro countries and also in Australia
that track was an old 68-69ish one called "a little less conversation"....
it is vastly superior to the original IMO(the Presley Estate don't release anything that isn't quality or will tarnish the Presley image)
here it is for you in case you haven't heard it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zx1_6F-nCaw video

a remix of another track from that period entitled "rubberneckin" also made the top 5 in several countries also...
heres the link for that one also...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DART7FA9Krs video

both of those track were huge disco/nightclub hits also...that put Presley back in the realm for younger listeners...

this one was also remixed for the modern generation and was a another huge 'club'hit...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rilrRctLZ34 video

Canadian circus troupe Cirque du Soleil who constantly tour the world with their shows have also released an album of Presley remixes
that they used in their dance/circus routines(they also released a Beatles one also and choreographed their songs into a themed show)...
families generally go to Soleil, so his music is being exposed to youngsters yet again...

back to the original question Isn't it fair to say Elvis Presley is much less popular than the Beatles nowadays?

I just think its "cool" to be a Beatle fan at the moment...
I don't hear many people say they listen to The Who, Led Zep, etc....but their remastered album always make the charts, so someone is listening to them?

and hey,
im not dissing The Beatles, I have all of their studio albums, I have everything McCartney was released as a solo artist(wings, classical, fireman, opera etc)
I also own probably half of George's solo material, a few Ringo albums and several of John's things also...

we're talking about three different era's of music basically-the fifties when elvis ruled-the sixties when the beatles started the second british invasion and the eighties when m.j. was the king of pop, although I'm a black guy who prefers soul music,i'm also a music collector so I have some elvis and the beatles in my collection and they're cool with me.

CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:if youre refering to John's "the beatles are bigger than jesus" comment.....and I assume you are....
that was taken out of context by the American "bible belt" fanatics....

Lennon didn't mean they were bigger than Jesus, he meant "kids put more faith, love and trust in musicians(than the bible) and they mean more to teens than religion"

Just because we put our trust in Jesus Christ who died for us rather than a musician does not make us fanatics.
My sympathy to those kids back then who listened and believed such crap like John said that they were
more popular than Jesus Christ. I don't think so! Say what you want, it did hurt the Beatles.

youre blinded by your religion Linda....

yet again....Lennon did not say what you assume he said....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONYVxatB1U4

and yes....there are "fanatics" in the Christian religion just like there are in every religion, and no, I did not say you were a fanatic....!
for example: the KKK are Christian fanatics, are they not?

and no, out of context comments did not "hurt the beatles".....
because from 1966-1970 they still had 11 #1 hits in the US alone( out of fifteen singles releases), that's nearly a 78% #1 strike rate!
and eight studio albums during the same period, seven of which topped the US charts(the other one made it to a lowly #2)

I wouldn't say Lennon's solo career suffered neither, he was probably more popular in the US than just about anywhere between 70-75 when he went into
being a 'house husband'(fulltime father)

infact John Lennon probably bought more people together in the name of love and peace in the 1970s than anyone including Jesus Christ....
the churches had an old fashioned regimented way of preaching to people and the youngsters of the day were not interested, Lennon spoke to the people in a simple, direct, modern way that they appreciated/understood and they responded accordingly...

and in the way of speaking simply and direct to the people about love and peace he probably had more in common with Jesus than many of the evangelical tv preachers who line their own nests, get mixed up with drugs, alcohol and hookers...Baker, Swaggart come to mind immediately., and im sure there a are a lot more also.

I am not involved in any religion. Again, Christianity is not a religion.
That ends the sermon for me.

Sorry. One more thing, I know the KKK and they are not Christians.
Not by what they teach anyway.

you are quite correct my good man....

three artists....
three totally different era's of music....
three different styles....

they cannot be compared in any way except how popular they were on the charts in their era....
and all three dominated the charts all over the world during the respective heights of their popularity...
