Appealing to popularity, using the fact that people booed Black Sabbath off stage in favor of Van Halen, is a logical fallacy. I don't know the guitarists that Iota is referencing, but I can definitely agree in regard to Zach Hill and Dave Lombardo. I can think of quite a few guitarists who wrote more technically intense pieces than Van Halen ever used. It's hard to really judge Eddie Van Halen's skill, considering his band was pretty "poppy" and thus relied on hooks and thus technical skill isn't so much of a factor, but from what I've heard, yeah... He's probably the most overrated guitarist of all time, next to Jimi Hendrix.

ok you dont need to like van halen respect talent when you see it. dont compare eddie to a grind or death metal guitarist that genre is the reason people dont like rock cuz they compare it to screaming gang vocals herd in that ******* shit. not taking away from those guitarist though but their not eddie van halen. David lee roth was big in the 80's and really fit it and yeah he can sing. alex IS good on the drums maybe not the best and if your gonna down mike with a bassist pick geddy lee or les claypool at least. dont disrespect one the biggest rock bands to ever grace the art of music 80 million records latter lets see grindcore artist even share a stage with them. they dont get it scream louder player faster your still not good you sound ******* stupid.

The Heaven and Hell album is a quality album - good cool vibe. Dio has got an outstanding voice.
To continue the discussion, I think that musicans can get better with age but it does depend on how much they practice. Once you hit the big time you are gonna lose focus, we're all human. There are some exceptions but generally speaking you will not practice as much at 40 as you did when you were 18.
I also think it's about a 'freshness factor', if it's new to YOUR ears, it will sound fresher, plus lots of bands start trends, then you get endless clones. This is probably more to do with the music companies than the bands though. Look at the EMO thing, one band goes big and suddenly there are dozens being pushed onto mtv.

Thats how it is now with most punk bands. greenday and blink 182 made it big along with sum 41 a few others now you got warped tour full of bands that most people dont even know all because of a select few.
