Which decade has better music?

This is something I have thought long about - but more in the context of 'has music peaked? and if so, when did it peak?"

Now, we all know the Beatles wrote 20 classics where other bands could only write 1 but some might say they had a clean slate to work with.

For me the 60's was an emerging decade which changed the face of music but didn't necessarilly contained the best.

The 70's was signifcant in that it brough to the fore legends of music, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Led Zep, Sabbath, Bowie, T-Rex, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Dire Straits, hell even Abba. Then the metal pioneers turned up, Lizzy, Rainbow, Van Halen, Maiden, UFO, Judas Priest.

As good as that was, for me the 80's were the place where music peaked - in terms of sheer great albums, especially mid to late 80's. Appetite for Destruction, Clutching at Straws, Seventh Son Of a Seventh Son, Brothers in Arms, Momentary Lapse of Reason, Whitesnake 1987, Keep The Faith, Tango In The Night, Bad (Michael Jackson), Hounds Of Love, Street Fighting Years, Radio Musicola, Actually (PSB), So - Peter Gabriel, Sowing The Seeds Of Love, Joshua Tree. Quality throughout.

The 90's were a bit more curious manly because music became more fragmented into loads more sub-genres. The only highlights I can remembers include the brilliant Roxette, Savage Garden, Chilli Peppers and Oasis.

For me the new millenium brought back some wonderful new music in the shape of Evanescence, My Chemical Romance, Jimmy Eat World, The Killers, Snow Patrol, 3 Doors Down and Keane to name but a few.

But whichever decade you love there is plenty on offer from all decades to keep us all happilly discovering for many years to come. Peace !
