FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD "welcome to the pleasuredome" cd,1984. #1 UK, #1 AU, #33 US
dumbass Americans!!!!!,why didnt this sell out there?????
one of the ten best albums of the 1980s IMO....
they got their name from an old poster of 'old blue eyes' Sinatra...
full of dance pop(relax, title track)through soul laced ballads(krisco kisses, black night white night),anti war songs(two tribes, war), and power ballads(the power of love).
there's even three covers on here...Springsteen's 'born to run', which they come awefully close to out-rocking The Boss, Edwin Starr's 'war' where they even have an impersonator inpersonating US President Reagan, and 'happy hi' which is a renamed title for 'do you know the way to san jose'(just cant fathom out why they called it something different?). there's even another impersonator on the spoken track 'the last voice' immitating Prince Charles.
the title track last a a full thirteen minutes here, much better than the four minute single version IMO and is best track on here for me.
'relax' was incidently the first single ever to sell three million copies in the UK(Elton's tribute to 'diana' out sold it eventually). these guys also became only the second artist to get their first three singles to top the UK charts(the first was Gerry & The Pacemakers, also a liverpool act!).
their debut single 'relax' also managed to stay in the UK charts for over a year(unheard of back then) and probably mainly due to the fact they released a different remix 12" vinyl single of it every month for a year....
Godley & Creme produced the videos here and their studio band was actually Ian Dury's "blockheads" band...not that any of it sounds like them though!!!
all up, a superb piece of 1980s pop that has stood the test of time to my ears nicely, thank you very much!!!!
allmusic rate this one 4.5/5(2.7 here),my score is only slightly lower than that, but what the heck, its brilliant anyway!
