I know this is an old post but I answer these threads whether they are old or not. Maybe someone else could learn from it. It sounds pretty much like the controller is OK, the cable is OK but your DAW is not configured correctly. You might have a section in your DAW that says MIDI devices IN. But you have to enable the track you are currently recording on to SEE this MIDI device. I don't think anything is wrong with the equipment as such. You just have to point the DAW track you are on (the current selected track) to the MIDI device you want it to see, whether you are recording on that track or not, or just want to hear live real-time playback while you play the controller.
