I like to think of them as remixes...he took a song and re-mixed it. A mash-up, to me, would be when you take two totally different songs, don't change them (maybe a smidge), and mash them together, like this (which I think is PHENOMENAL):

As for Kalkbrenner, I think it's kinda cool when they take an old song and kind of revive it. Look at it this way, the youngins might stumble across a great song. If it takes Kalkbrenner remixing a song to bring attention back to Grace Slick, then I say, DO IT!
