do you listen to classical often Jerome???
if so,or if not, you obviously take the plunge once in a while, right?
have you bothered to listen to the McCartney classical pieces at all?
would love your verdict on his music sometime to see how it compares to proffessional classic composers, and whether he knows what he's really doing or simply being cocky McCartney doing a "im Paul McCartney,i wrote 'sgt.pepper' etc, i can do that"...you know, a classical wannabe?!?

I listen to classical music every now and then - not that often. Have a large CD collection of classical works (courtesy of a subscription to a classical music magazine which comes with a free disc every month) but I cannot really comment on it. I just don't know enough about it. But every once in a while I find something really different. I would not be that mad about piano concertos, which for the most part are pretty self indulgent, albeit performed by some extremely talented people. Kind of like a guitarist playing a solo for too long. After a while it just gets a bit too much. I like music that changes tack often - keeps the interest level up. And I like a sound palette that changes quite frequently. I mostly listen to classical music for the string arrangements. Gives me ideas. I could not provide a verdict on Macca's work - only an opinion. Will give it a whirl one day.

which is why I don't care for rock instrumentals.
we probably have a different view on what is too long

It's easy to write material for songs because essentially the music portion of it does not really change for most songs (I'm talking middle of the road songs here), the trick to making a song good, apart from the occasional guitar hook or whatever, is the use of lyrics to manipulate the listener. Writing instrumental stuff is far more challenging. It's much harder to hold a listener's interest when there are no lyrics.

I've always thought that the only people who can truly appreciate instrumental music are those who play instruments
the reason music with lyrics is more popular is that anybody can sing
they may not sound good, but they can sing
most people can't play an instrument
hats off to those who can

The Ventures would be sorry to hear that. Tommy Emmanuel too. And Duane Eddy and...Broad, flat statements can really box you in.

Many moons ago my parents took me to see some piano teacher, the theory being that I showed an aptitude for music. She took my hands and banged them up and down on the keyboard and proceeded to scare the living shit out of me. End of piano lessons. Anyway I wanted to play football and could not really be bothered with all this plinky plonk nonsense. A decision I regret to this day. I can dabble on a piano but that's about it. I had to wait until my late teens to discover the absolute joy of the electric guitar. Then I was HOOKED! The neighbours were not amused........

My hat goes off to you J man ! I wish I had the discipline to learn the electric and acoustic guitar! I know chords but that's as far as it goes ! Have you ever tried slide guitar J ? I think it has to do with dampening the strings ?...it's difficult!
