What Are You Listening To?

ENZSO "enzso" cd,1996.

a classical reworking of Split Enz songs by former Enz-man Eddie Rayner and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
rather than just being a straight classical album, this one contains vocals by Neil & Tim Finn plus Dave Dobbyn,Annie Crummer and Sam Hunt.
the tracks here have been very well chosen, ones like "message to my girl",,"stuff and nonsense" and "my mistake" slip easily into classical mode, others like "dirty creature","i see red" and "poor boy" have found a new lease of life within this genre especially "dirty creature" which when originally released the voclas seemed distant and muffled, but here they can be heard in their full glory.
but unfortunately, like most classical material, i find it all too much the same old-same old stuff!
another ENZSO album followed a couple of years after this one, not nearly as good IMO, and i didnt like it enough at the time to purchase it.
all up, not one for the casual listener by any means, more so an unneccessary companion piece to the legacy of Split Enz....
sorry, but can only find one link here...?!?

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

ELVIS COSTELLO & THE BRODSKY QUARTET "the juliet letters" cd,1993.

whats that you say...Elvis doing a classical album???
well actually, yes and no??!! work that one out if you will?!
Elvis has always said that this is not a classical album, rather a serious album, but i think of it as classical as he is using a classical quartet for the music with no contemporary instruments to be heard anywhere.
the album is a collection of songs based on fictitious letters sent to Juliet of "romeo and juliet" fame...
some great Costello tracks on here, some downright aweful ones also...and thats coming from a diehard Elvis fan!.
this is probably my least liked Elvis album, but still it scrapes in for a pass mark here despite a third of the tracks on it that i do not like...Tiggi swears blind he loves this one, so i guess its one of those albums you either dismiss or swear by!!!
but hey, gotta admire the man for stepping outside the box to try something different even if it doesnt work...like Neil Young, both could sit inside their comfort zones and the fans would be happy and the albums would still sell, but they both see the 'big picture' to expand their horizons and push themselves to the limits!
