What Are You Listening To?

ELVIS PRESLEY "his hand in mine" 1960, vinyl. #13 US, #3 UK.

ok, i get it, its not a "pop" album, but we have no genre for Gospel, but i guess(after consultation with MH) that it probably should go here since most of Elvis' material would be classed as "pop". this was Elvis' second 'real' studio album since he left the US Army earlier in the year, the other being the classic "elvis is back" album.Elvis litterally had to beg RCA Records to let him record a whole album of Gospel music as a tribute to his mother who passed away whilst he was in the army, this was the last 'real' album he made until 1969...the ones inbetween were either movie soundtracks or various tracks the studio put together as fillers.
this album was recorded in one session, not really surprising since EP grew up on Gospel music and a lot of these tracks are ones that Elvis knew since he was a boy in Tennessee.
the album was recorded using on piano, bass and percussion, and the brilliant backing vocals of The Jordanaires.
the upbeat Gospel tracks here are so infectious you cant help but to clap your hands in rythem and tap your feet along with the music, the slower songs are more thought provoking and serious by nature, and if none of the tracks here get you thinking about the afterlife or a 'higher power', then im not sure what will. the honesty and sincerity of Elvis' vocals here is something to behold.
its also interesting to note that during his lifetime Elvis won three Grammy awards( 1967,72,74)...all three were for his Gospel/Spiritual songs, and not his Rock 'n' Roll numbers, which says a lot for the quality of his Gospel material.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Witness the return of the Jagger impersonator! I find it hilarious how the only videos available for songs from Jagger's only decent solo album 'She's The Boss' are ones of this crazy dude dancing!!

Didn't think I would be able to find anything on this album, but sure enough, allmusic has it, and even 1 clip on youtube. I wouldn't venture any further to find anything else. This is a not a good album. Not sure where I picked this up. Discount bin maybe. Hope it was cheap. Not sure which dude is D or J. One of them can sing, the other can't. Chipmunk vocals, and without any intentional distortion techniques. Very ruff on the nerves to listen to. Lucky for you, none of his is the youtube clip. That one happens to be the best on the album, We'll Never Have To Say Goodbye Again. This is a pretty good song but not theirs. Never heard of who wrote it, but it was a top 10 hit for England Dan & John Ford Coley, a few years after this album and I think was also covered by the Carpenters. The version here is ok, for soft pop, but only because the other dude is singing. Dan Seals of Seals & Crofts plays on this album, so that's the other type of music this is. Four decent tracks and six bombs. Never charted.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Sing My Song

Best Track - We'll Never Have To Say Goodbye Again

Turn on the radio
We'll play it way down low
There's a tear in your eye
That's reflecting the fire's glow
and I wish the night would never end
The sun ain't gonna be my friend
Lying here waiting and wishing I knew when

We'll never have to say goodbye again
We'll never have to say goodbye again

You must leave I know you will
I won't let you go until you show me
some secret for making this time stand still
And somewhere, sometime from now
Together again somehow
All of the waiting will seem like a moment and then

We'll never have to say goodbye again
We'll never have to say goodbye again

The whole night afraid to see the light
And the whole day cryin
Wishin I knew when
We'll never have to say goodbye again
We'll never have to say goodbye again

And I wish the night would never end
The sun ain't gonna be my friend
We'll never have to say goodbye again
We'll never have to say goodbye again

Art's seventh solo effort, his first in seven years. Where's Jimmy Webb when you need him. Art had made a discovery of one hit wonder Stephen Bishop (On And On) and uses mostly his material on this album. No standouts and a few bombs. Cover of the Percy Sledge classic is very bad (luckily no clip), but not the worst. That goes to King Of Tonga, God that was bad. The other known cover of the doo-wop So Much In Love (Tymes,1963) seems to work. Bishop plays on the album along with Steve Gadd, Nicky Hopkins, Kenny Rankin and Michael Brecker. He needed all the help he could get on this one, which barely snuck into the like range for me, and is the last of his albums I have. It reached #134 in the states and #72 across the pond.

Worst Track - King Of Tonga

Best Track - Love Is The Only Chain

Love is forever, baby so are we.
For every ship there is a shining sea.
For every heart, there is a waiting heart.
You are the light that lead me through the dark.
Your love keeps shining like a star,
When I am lost I know, your love will find me.
Love Is The Only Chain.
I say, Love Is The Only Chain.
Oh, Love Is The Only…
We fit together, baby we belong.
The music plays, you're my only song.
Here with you, I am complete.
You have become the very heart of me.
Your love keeps shining like a star,
When I am lost I know, your love will find me.
Love Is The Only Chain.
I say, Love Is The Only Chain.
Oh, Love Is The Only…
Love Is The Only Chain.
Love Is The Only Chain.
I say, Love Is The Only Chain.
Love Is The Only Chain.

Doncha hate it when you're about to post a 'review of an album with 18 tracks, get down to the final ratings (3s,2s,1s) and accidently close off all tabs....you get all the chart placings, links, write ups, etc while listening to the album, and feel like you've wasted almost 2hrs of your time.

oh, well, i guess you can all wait till tomorrow to see this review:

LEO SAYER "the greatest hits" 2010, cd.

darn it, here i go again...

anyone here actually surprised i listen to Leo? i actually bought this one as a replacement for an old 1980s 'best of' vinyl album that went missing on the journey of life.

as far as im aware this album was/is only released in Australia to commemorate Leo's Citizenship in becoming an Australian in 2009...he has lived here since 2005.
Leo was a singer/songwriter predominantly from the 1970s, who with his falsetto vocals could sing/write in various styles of music, from pop, disco, love songs, soaring ballads and even tracks that could pass in Tin Pan Alley/vaudeville.
this a timeless collection of sing-a-long and foot tapping tracks that still sound good today.
for some strange reason i thought that this one might rate higher than it does, but thats the way it goes today!
