Which decade has better music?

I think more often than not, your answer to this will depend on the decade you "grew up" in. By that I mean when you matured as a person. Obviously as a rule, kids have little interest in music. Once you reach the age where you actually process music, you develop an interest in what is currently being played in whatever media you are surrounded by. Thus you develop an attachment to that period. In my case that would be the 60's, a decade never to be equaled as far as influence on my musical taste. Those that have a sincere interest will eventually branch out in an effort to discover what they have missed. There is not any genre that doesn't captivate me at this point in my life. But I do reserve the right to qualify that statement with "some stuff just sucks".:wink:

I think it also depends on how you were raised. If your parents were big on music, and you grow up in a household with traces of different decades all around you, you're bound to be influenced by it. At least I think so..

Also, I think it has to do with what kind of music you like. For example, if you're more into rock then the 60's and 70's may be more appealing, if you're more into metal then the 80's might be more your style, if you're into alternative the 90's appeal more and so on and so on.

I love the 70's for just about every genre of music. There was a better attention to instruments as well, also the sound was unique for all my preferred genres.

Bands such as Abba, The Police, Def Leppard, Guns N' Roses, U2, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, Wham etc etc. are all genre-defining bands!

BC of the grunge and NuMetal movement? Just curious not being sarcastic. I know the 90's were a brilliant time for music.

But the 60's sort of inspired the revolutionary music of the 90's you would think... Or maybe not?

Looking at the numbers again, and having spent more time on this site since I made a similar observation, I think it might reflect the age of MD members, as Music Head pointed out.

While it's fun to pick a decade and debate over it, to me it gets more interesting when you look at certain smaller periods of time and see where there are creative surges and breakthroughs, as well as dead spots and plateaus. Or when you try to look for patterns between demographics, personality, and musical taste.

Well, being only 29 (30 in January - eek!) most of the music I've heard has been from the last three decades, so I make my judgment based on that level of exposure. In my opinion, only very select music from the '80's is much good -- Depeche Mode is FANTASTIC but I still like their '90's music better than their '80's music, or their most recent stuff.

Most of the modern bands I listen to like Tool, Muse, The Mind Museum and Dredg have influences directly from the 60's and 70's anyways. So it all eventually blends together and evolves nicely like water.
