Looking for Specific Type of Jazz
#11
Humblyden,

Sounds to me that you are looking for the reckless abandon prevalent in free and/or avant-garde jazz!

I prefer this type of jazz(listener since 1975) because you never know what's coming next. A good place to start would be Marshall Allen's - Sun Ra & his Arkestra. Heavy free jazz and themes of outer space music.

Check out Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz, John Coltrane - A Love Supreme, Art Ensemble of Chicago - Full Force, Carla Bley Orchestra- Escalator Over the Hill, and Anthony Braxton(anything or The Berlin /Montreux Concerts.. if you can find it). These are just a few but enough to get you started. The sound is at times wild, eratic, unstructured and " all over the place ".,,,a veritable feast for the ears !

There are also some free jazz/avant-garde jazz vocalists but start with the music I mentioned above. I researched the difference between free and avant-garde jazz and there's really no difference in either type as far as I could ascertain.

Let me know what you think of free jazz ! I am always willing to talk jazz and recommend artists.

Steve Oh I am impressed. You are going to fit right in here. I know nothing about jazz but we now obviously have a member who does. Your posts are incredibly informative and an education. Stick around sonny.

Thanks, Jerome ! I intend to hang around for awhile. Can't leave MD with all the great recommendations by yourself, Crazy-Horse, Music Head, Tiggi and Gryphon ! (if I missed anybody - no offence)

Ya I've bounced around with different music.

Some of the newer jazz groups like Jacob Fred jazz Odyssey, Medeski Martin & Wood, Marco Benevento or Bad Plus might be something you would like

In the Django Gypsy style check out Bireli Lagreen or John Jorgenson
