Digging this thread (and basically everyone I'm posting in now) up because I forgot the URL to here and missed out on a lot of discussion, sue me (don't really, please).
I'm a HUGE Santana fan so I was pretty excited for this one. Overall, it felt kinda meh. Some really cool stuff, some meh stuff, and some really cringe-worthy moments (the lyrics to "Choo Choo" made me pull over to the side of the road the first time I heard the 2nd verse. I couldn't stop laughing. They're awful.). I was pretty disappointed all in all. I had high hopes, especially after how much I loved Shape Shifter. Ah well.
As for the discussion going on prior about older Santana works; I think my favorite era of his is the jazz-fusion era. Caravanserai-Borboletta were all truly fantastic albums. The live performances through those years were straight fire too, as was his tour with John McLaughlin ("A Live Supreme" from the Chicago Amphitheater is probably one of the sickest bootlegs I've ever had the pleasure of listening to). "Sacred Fire" is great too; I lovelovelove Carlos' solo on "Make Somebody Happy." Plus, the video is really enjoyable to watch, with all the people in the crowd swaying and smiling. It's one of those videos that represents what music is about to me; just getting lost in happiness and bliss and forgetting the troubles of the world.
Gotta throw some love out for "The Swing of Delight" though. That's my favorite solo Carlos album (with "Illuminations" and "Love Devotion & Surrender" as close seconds). Carlos, Shorter, Herbie, and Ron Carter? More please.
Unlike Jerome, I never really got into Carlos' overly commercial period. "Amigos" - "Marathon" are basically complete unknowns for me, minus whatever tracks are on "The Essential." I know a couple songs here and there (LOVE "Revelations" off of "Festival"), but my knowledge takes a huge hit during that era. It picks back up with "Zebop" though I've yet to find a copy of "Shango," despite my best efforts.
