I'm guessing here but it might come from the term vapourware (or vaporware) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

That's a very interesting guess. That's not to say that I am convinved that's the actual origin, but it's definitely interesting, and proof is not everything in every situation. Artists do sometimes keep something secret intentionally. 

Any other suggestions?
