Deciphering The Beatles ..............Eleven..........Within You Without You.

Lyrics

We were talking-about the space between us all
And the people-who hide themselves behind a wall of illusion
Never glimpse the truth-then it's far too late-when they pass away.
We were talking-about the love we all could share-when we find it
To try our best to hold it there-with our love
With our love-we could save the world-if they only knew.
Try to realise it's all within yourself
No-one else can make you change
And to see you're really only very small,
And life flows within you and without you.
We were talking-about the love that's gone so cold and the people,

Who gain the world and lose their soul-
They don't know-they can't see-are you one of them?
When you've seen beyond yourself-then you may find, peace of mind,
Is waiting there-
And the time will come when you see
we're all one, and life flows on within you and without you.

This is quite a simple song in meaning..................by this time, George had become (?) quite spiritual in his outlook and was involved in Eastern philosophies...................He was spending time with Ravi Shanker who had some influences on this particular lyric...........
George is reflecting on how people do not fulfil their spiritual potential and that the effort needed to do so is easily within their grasp..........................
In some ways this is a forerunner or companion of “All You Need is Love” but, in more spiritual terms.
There are overtones of material ism and reincarnation within the lyrics but, no direct references to specific people.
The style is worthy of note .........it contains George’s signature of the time opposing couplets ..........., George uses this format often in this period often taking about one thing in a line (or phrase ) and in the next , the opposite.............
There are also references to the river of life indirectly in the lyric in the idea of life flowing on.........
Although on a Beatles album, this is not really a Beatle song . It contains only George and session Indian musicians.
It was not really the first choice for the album in question ( Sgt Pepper) ................George had written “Only A Northern Song” to flow along(?) with the early concept of The Pepper album :Liverpool.
At the end of the song there is some laughter...............some people have misconstrued this as mocking the song but it is documented that after such an emotionally intense time , it as time to lighten up before the next song.
It is also said that there was a longer version of this song intended and that the melody owes a lot to Ravi Shanker.......................There are no outtakes or demos circulating to prove or disprove this idea.

The recording released on the album was sped up to C#; an instrumental version of the song at the original speed and in the original key appears on the Anthology 2 album. Thanks Wiki
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

Thanks again Gryph for your song capsule of George's Within You Without You. I have always liked this song as I thought it was very progressive for 1967 !

Also Eric Clapton does an incredible acoustic guitar version on the Tribute to George DVD with a complete East Indian Orchestra !
The ultimate connection is between a performer and its' audience!
