Hey everyone. Question: what is Alternative music?

I'm new here. Big fan of early British punk bands like Gang of Four, Wire, The Fall -- The Clash and Sex Pistols too, but my favorites are the really scratchy and messy ones. I also like some more melodic and accessible stuff, but nothing on mainstream radio. Which is not to say that being on the radio automatically makes a song bad. I just haven't personally heard anything on there in years that I didn't hate.

My question today is what people mean by "Alternative music." I think of it as rock music that took some sort of influence from the punk movement without necessarily being punk itself, but it seems like there are a lot of opinions. Care to comment?

Welcome aboard MD, oslemke! Great question you pose! I have asked the same question in the past on two separate occasions!....lol....no one has really been able to provjde me with a logical or convincing answer! Someone said that the artist records for an independent record company as opposed to one of the major record labels. Does that fact warrant a separate genre? ...I think not! The same thing happened with regards to INDIE rock! Too many genres and too much music out there!

Let's see what explanations we get! I have come to the conclusion that alternative is ROCK!..Basically what you said!
