Holidaying in the USA

I like my kids! (and we've already been to Disneyland Paris when they were younger......it was cool). Although I did get the driving directions a bit wrong and subsequently driving around the Arc de Triomphe was as scary as some of the rollercoasters.

Atlanta is a really nice city. I've been there quite a few times in the past few years... It used to hold a sort of mysticism to me, because it was the capital of my state and it was a large city that I never visited. I live in a town with 400 people, so... But yeah. I've seen a lot of cool bands there.

I would suggest visiting the Pacific Northwest. Northern California, Oregon, and Washington are all very interesting places with a lot of cultural and geographical diversity. If natural beauty interests you, the highway that trails along the Pacific coast is lovely, the redwood forests are amazing... yeah.

But I must say, Disneyland is fun even if you're a cynical non-fan. I can say so from personal experience as a cynical non-fan. ;P
Space Mountain makes the hours of waiting in lines worth it.

Bring him to Oregon.

The northwest is the region I most want to visit but haven't yet. It does sound very appealing. In fact Portland, Oregon is high on my list of cities to move to even though I've never been there.

And the votes are in -

looks like it's going to (provisionally) be the West. Portland to San Francisco to Las Vegas to Salt Lake City.

Any thoughts about what to do or what to avoid along this general route would be good if anyone's got any thoughts.

p.s don't worry chess mess - I'm not angling for an invite!

The Black Hills - in South Dakota (Mt. Rushmore & Crazy Horse Memorial) plus all the caves and cool stuff like that is a must see I think. My hubby and I loved our trip there a couple years ago. Also, just outside of Billings, Montana is the site of the Battle of Little Big Horn (Custer's last stand). Pretty cool to see the battle play out, via all the grave markers showing where soldiers and warriors died, including where Custer fell. There is an interesting little museum there, memorials, a National Cemetary and also a mass grave where many of Custer's solders are spending their eternal rest. It was very interesting. :coffee:

All booked! lots of compromises made generally to my husband's need to go everywhere he's seen in John Wayne's movies.

Sedona - Monument Valley - Grand Canyon - Mammoth Lakes - Vegas - Yosemite - San Francisco

(see how I didn't get my way at all! - still exciting though, even though Barry Manilow's not playing Las Vegas when we're there.... sad face)

My daughter (today sporting an aqua wig and 14 hole white Doc Martin boots with snakes up the side) is preparing by getting herself a black parasol - 'nuff said. My son remains (as ever) unimpressed.
