We're planning our summer holidays and it looks like it's going to be America (sorry, France)
We've only been once before - New York/Boston/New Hampshire/Maine.
So - any ideas for where's good to go? (while I know this is a broad remit the most important thing is that it must cater for 2 cynical teenagers who hate Disney).

You probably have experienced more of the USA than I have, honestly, considering that the farthest north I've been is North Carolina. As such, I don't really have any suggestions.

A few years ago we went on a fly-drive to the South, starting at Atlanta and ending up in Memphis (via North Carolina). I wasn't keen on Memphis, but Atlanta and the state of Georgia were really nice and the Smoky Mountains were breathtaking.

If you want to try out the southeast I can give you some pointers. I live in Atlanta. It is a good place to start since it has a large international airport to fly into/out of.
What kinds of things are you looking for? Natural beauty or culture? Or some of both? Are you going to be renting a car once you get here or flying everywhere?

Both really - good art museums score strongly with my daughter and I - but we all love scenery and general quirky stuff/places.

Okay, if you choose the Southeast and Atlanta here are some suggestions.
Atlanta:
High Museum of Art - the largest art museum in Atlanta. A must if you come here.
Eyedrum Gallery - the complete opposite of the High. Small and weird.
Fernbank Museum - natural history museum
If you go to the Fernbank continue down Ponce de Leon Ave to the town of Decatur. It has lots of cool little shops and restaurants in the downtown part.
Once you leave Atlanta I recommend you head northwest to Nashville and Memphis then southwest to New Orleans then further west again to Austin, Texas. Avoid the interstate highways if you're feeling adventurous and want to see the wilderness and small towns.
