Cool bands

b7478i Wrote:Personally I find it strange that someone won't listen to a band or song just because it's very popular. Quite frankly music and one's tastes and preferences depend on personal choice. If something sounds good and you love listening to it, why would you stop just because it's very popular?!? Don't force yourself to not listen to someone just because they're popular.
I agree completely with B7478i. A band's popularity shouldn't be the deciding factor on whether someone likes them or not. It should always be down to the music. Sadly, there are some people that will stop liking a band or refuse to listen to a band because they're popular. At the end of the day, it's their loss.

If one of the bands that I like suddenly became popular then I'd be happy for them!

I think most people who like underground bands, then dislike them when they become mainstream, do this because what is required to become mainstream often shaves the "edge" off of the band in question. In some cases this isn't true, but very rarely. It's not so much the quality of being mainstream that makes a band bad, but rather the qualities required to be mainstream.

Every band Has to somewhat evolve in order to stay alive. if you truly care what your fans think and you have been around for a while then your going to try to keep your old fans around as well as attract new ones. Take metallica for example imagian if death magnetic was just like master now one now would like at all. now you take a band that as always done the same thing like pennywise. I rest my case.

Good that Death Magnetic sounds like crap and you have to buy Guitar Hero 3 to listen to some quarter-decently produced songs that btw still suck ass.

Oh, and to quote Sunn O))) here:

i can understand why someone wouldn't stop listening to the music..... although, another view point is-- when you find an off stream, underground band that actual sounds good, you've found something that is both complimentary to your taste in music AND something that sets you apart from the collective of the mainstream 'normal' people everyone so desperately tries to escape. if you don't switch music you either don't care that you are normal, or don't realize it. so why not switch it up when your band becomes sold out? that is what keeps the circle of life in the band world going! .......... the increasing speed of this process is the only thing that concerns me- bands used to be popular for years and years. now they are rising and falling like ripples in a pond. :frown:

I think for most people, when they find an underground band they like, in their mindset it sets them apart from everyone else. They feel original and unique. Then when the band goes mainstream, they are no longer different so they stop listening. Or the band looses appeal for them because since everyone else likes them, they must be bad.

I have to say I'm not like that though.
I listen to both mainstream and underground.
The way I see it, the band is mainstream for a reason.

I can think of several that are popular and have been for some time - No Doubt, U2, Nine Inch Nails, Green Day, Dave Matthews Band, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers spring to mind.
