Fifty Eight............Euphonasia.................Dark Blue Hair
#1
Here at MD we try to support local talent. Euphonasia did in the past post here on the site
In thier initial enthusiasm they asked if I could feature them in the album review so here it is.

They provided the following info:

Euphonasia is an up and coming electronic jazz-rock fusion group that indulges in the art of groove with fun catchy melodies. The musicians of Euphonasia have very extensive and eclectic professional backgrounds in music. Individually they are full time professional musicians in the Washington DC area that decided to get together and create some music for the sheer joy of it. The name Euphonasia comes from the lead melodic instrument of the group which is a tenor brass instrument called a Euphonium. The difference is the euphonium player plays through a series of electronic effects, so much that it doesn’t even sound like a euphonium anymore.

“Dark Blue Hair” is their newly released debut album, and there is something on it for everyone, no matter your musical taste. Their music is best described as fun, catchy, upbeat, funky, progressive, harmonically unique and improvisatory with a lot of musical interplay. The album is mostly filled with original music, and there are also a few popular cover tunes, done in the style of Euphonasia. Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” Toto’s “Rosanna,” and even a medley of music from the movie “Predator.”

They have provided a link which they have asked would be open for one week:

so it will be removed on 19/6/11

Happy reviewing!
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

in the middle of listening to this one now, will rate it on a "single listen" when through.

before i mention anything about the album...instrumentals are generally not my thing!!

there are some fine pieces of music on this one, great percussion and piano work also...a must when Jazz is involved IMO.
the problem i have with this album is the length of the tracks, others may like it but i prefer instrumentals to be short, sharp and sweet, say, no longer than three minutes in length otherwise my attention drifts away to other places.
there is definately a market for this album, just not sure that it is my marketplace, although my initial rating on the "MH Scale" is inconclusive in that i neither dislike or like it,pretty sure that not disliking it is a good thing as it can grow on me over time. i did like 5 of the 10 tracks, another couple i couldnt make up my mind and three i just didnt like.

tracks:

1. knockin' s#!t over (1.0*)
2. bad romance (2.0*)
3. give johnny his cupcake! (1.5*)
4. dark blue hair (1.0*)
5. the porcupine dolphin (2.0*)
6. i aint got time to bleed (2.5*)
7. release the crackin' (1.0*)
8. rosanna (2.0*)
9. area 51 (2.0*)
10. untitled (1.5*)

rating 1.65

Euphonasia…………………Dark Blue Hair
Jazz in 2011!
Track One Knockin $ #!+ Over A Jazz inspired approach with some progressive influence. It´s mild easy listening as far as Jazz goes , there is rhythm and structure in this . The approach reminds me a little of the more melodic Jazz fusion sounds of the 70s.

Track Two Bad Romance A Nice laid back track with deep bass phrasing at the beginning and a fantasy feel which develops into a stronger and more dominant mid section. Listenable and entertaining ……………….

Track Three Give Johnny His Cupcake A nice loose work out around a complex riff. Sounds a bit like something that Keith Emerson might have been involved with in the later ELP days.

Track Four Dark Blue Hair A smoother track with some nice harmonious sounds ,something for late nights coffee and ………………….

Track Five The Porcupine Dolphin A slightly more upbeat track, It has a few interesting moments but tends to be a little strident in its approach at times

Track Six I Ain’t Got Time To Bleed This track has classical/rock feel about it and could well be useful as film music in the correct environment………………

Track Seven Release The Cracklin’ Smooth and easy keyboard lead track with some funky guitar.

Track Eight Rosanna This track reminded me of the sort of thing Chick Corea did around the time of Return To Forever.

Track Nine Area 51 Another interesting melody jazz work out.

Track Ten Untitled A short vocal track which is not really in touch with the rest of the album.

Overall this is a good listen: it is well constructed modern jazz and has many good moments. I think it will appeal to a niche market but one never knows!
