Music / Media Formats Part 1
#1
Just been reading how long will CDs last . Partly a subject which I have been intending to do so hear goes .
Over the years we have seen many formats of recording inorder to store sound [and vision for that matter] First of all there was the record which began as wax , then bacolight [feel free to correct the spelling] and finally vinal . Other things came . Tape of course though open spool never really took off in the domestic world finding its main place in the profesional world . 8 track , don't know in the USA , but was a non strater in the UK . Yet as I belive you could get them for cars before cassete made it mobile . Then of course there was also cassete which did enjoy a good heyday . Had its disadvantags though . No problems in the album world , but probaly becouse of cost , never really went much in the single world . Only in the latter days were cassete singles briefly common . Also cassetes could be very problematic . And there is quite a big list , too many to name . The recordings did where off the quickest .
Then of course came CD . First albums then graduating to singles . And pretty much wiped out vinal . However originally one could not do ho,e recording one them . But then computers came common place , but also hifi cd recorders came . Phillips lauched them in 1998 . I did have one until I finally wore it out . Unlike I thought , these never really took off . And compred to computer , the discs for these , though better quality , were expensive by comparison . Sony do still do one but it has never been a case of all CD players being made this way . Also whatever happened to those CDs that could not be defaced ? The ones you could eat your dinner off ?
But the funny thing about all this . CD which is still going to kick around for years yet has had a good run for its money . Cassete tape is dead and burried though I do still have a few floating around . But as for vinal , to a ver small degree , has just managed to hol its own . DJs still like to use it . And there are still a few dye hards out there . Please see part 2 Cool

Further to part 1 . It might be mentioned of a few formats that never took off at all . Phillips , who as I understnad brought us cassete launched a system "Digital Compact Cassete" That was a system which could still play the old type tapes . Looked promissing when lauched in the about 1994 , but ended in failier . Technics was the only other company I know made them . JVC as I recall tried this system which form what I can remeber was some type of very small recordble disc , Digital Anologe Tape I think it was called . Obvious that was going to be a non starter . Sony came up with Digital Audio Tape , something that looked like a very small cassete tape . Again got nowhere . They also did Mini Disc . That had a good go but I belive it too has bitten the dust though I belive it did find its place with people like reporter who need a small recoding machine . So I was once told . As I also once read , that was what cassette tape was originally meant for .
So , where next ? Well as it goes I really don't think downloads are going to take over completely yet . Still not everybody is in a position to do that . And as it goes , I still like to have it on something . Yes I use download , but I will still have the CD if I can get it .
Myslef I am one for storing music on something that can be inserted into and then removed form the player . So as you can imagine , things like MP3 palyers , Ipods etc are not for me .
These USB Memory Sitcks or whatever you care to call them could be the way things will go . I would certainly favour that . And such macines outside of the computers do exist . Certainly for in the car , and be it in intergrated into the DVD recorders in the home . Mind you tough , Sony do a USB player but that is for both Audio and Visual . And an oddball size so it wont stack on the HIFI .
Well other than that fact that I would love to here other peoples opinions on this one , I will round this , what many will find rather boring history lesson off with this . As I have mentioned in other threads , one war which has been fought , is between WMA and MP3 . WAV it seems never really stood a chance . Well it seems that MP3 is now winning hands down . Bit like the war between VHS and Betamax . VHS after a good fight finally won the day . And Vidio 2000 and 800 never stood a chance full stop . Well not here in the UK they didn't . Cool:blah:

I would still be buying vinyl if I could get everything on vinyl. Mine that are 45 years old work just fine.
8-tracks, cassettes, had a few but pretty much skipped right over those.
CD's are fine except for them piss ass cases they come in. Whoever came up with those should be shot. I prefer when they are in cardboard.
MP3's I've been using for a few years but I sure miss that artwork.
I just go with the flow.

Pretty much know where you are coming from on that , that is if you are thinking what I am thinking . The Album cover containing the pictures and information . Yes you don't get that with downloads , well not much as I belive . However correct me if I am wrong , but in some cases I think you can download the Album cover to print off , but then if this is posible , what do you get with this ? Probably only the top cover picture . No when it comes down to it , I still tend to only use download when needed . Really , this is the same thing as I say about taste in music . Keep an open mind and don't right off any format that you already have . Not if they are formats that ether still are or once were regularly used . After all , what is there to loose ? You never know when it might come in usefull .

I've had cassettes, but don't use them any more.

I still have several hundred vinyl albums in regular use, & I'm one of those Luddites who believe it still outperforms any digital format. Having said that, my purchases for the last 17 years have been on CD only, since it sounds good enough, and presents a much lighter load on my floors & shelves.

I frequent a hi-fi forum in my spare time, and a lot of people are still only buying vinyl...

I once did the ultimate test to see if vinyl sound is better that CD.

My uncle is well installed with big good speakers, big equalizer, 2 vinyl turntable and one professional CD player that was used by a radio station. So everything was set for the test.

The album for the test was Mike Oldfield - Five Miles Out. So it was the original vinyl VS the remastered HDCD (the only thing I don't know about the test is if the CD player could support HDCD).

So I listened well, we could switch between the CD and the Vinyl as we wanted to compare.

I realized that the vinyl had a much more present sound, more clear, more powerful.

The CD seemed veiled compared to the vinyl; the sound lacked dynamism and colors.

I felt that I discovered a truth about my music that I could never really do a thing about because it would be too complicated to go back to vinyl in my situation.

So I try to forget this experience and live with CD and MP3, after all they always satisfied me before I heard this vinyl comparison!

So finally yes, vinyl are better that cd!
