"I heard it on the radio"
#1
Some artists/groups I've listened to recently; no claim these were the songs I heard.
Flash and the Pan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMQkTqeSXD4 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uiIxAUmPMA
The Reels: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4_DjDBl-xE << Damn fine take and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXoLZChS5GE
The Bronx Horns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFsTDfJaOQA and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czXHdtTHAxY << Get them hips moving now!
more later...

OK. some jazzers now:
Claire Daly, bari sax: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELEpK7U0ZDs

Frank Potenza, guitar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rWDcH17AWU and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zQhXPxlntY << No mutts in Dizzy's bands....

Joel Spencer, drummer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XP77opnCqfo << Click on "Show More" and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upDFN0h7Vj8

Sean Jones, trumpet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hDD1DZXOVw << They vary everything to bring you the inner meaning (the "guts" if you will) of the tune and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dPxf9WoJWo << Of course this was rehearsed but not over-rehearsed--that's the essence of jazz.

A marvy always-jazz singer: Rene Marie. Started as a pro at age 40 (the family was grown then). Sings in the style of some classic singers but does not ape them. Her Bio and Discog (all 4-stars or better, and on solid labels): http://www.allmusic.com/artist/ren%C3%A9.../biography and http://www.allmusic.com/artist/ren%C3%A9...iscography
Some tunes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOHrUX8glYQ << Tell SteveO about this one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBi5FHs1KTQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQtse2B4Khk << This is politically-charged and definitely not for every taste. PM me if you object--I'll consider removing it.
BONUS: hour + concert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOHrUX8glYQ

Tragic story here--a brilliant guitarist, just finding her "voice", dying of a heart-attack at 32 (she was a junkie): Emily Remler. Her Discog (look at all the stars!): http://www.allmusic.com/artist/emily-rem...iscography
Some tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJYqqA1U0mc << She died a year later in Australia. *
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGVXr4Ji49o << What a gem this is! See commenter Speiser's ER quote.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqC8Cs_tgA4
* Y'all must have strong jive in Australia--she died just about a year later down there.

Everything-in-the-mix background (pro boxer and skydiver) and entrancing lyricist--Tupelo, Mississippi's own Paul Thorn. His Bio and Discog: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqC8Cs_tgA4 and http://www.allmusic.com/artist/paul-thor...iscography << Lotsa stars. "Skin in the game" is his album of undeservedly-obscure covers, What the Hell is Going On Get in touch: http://www.paulthorn.com/ << Best thing since Lyle Lovett? You judge--some tunes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tWHaId1s8U << Lotta guys can relate to this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4kt03DulRk << Wry, witty and on-point
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSWmFilNTXE << He speaks nothing but the truth. Reconcile it all for yourself.

Want an unusual jazz grouping? How about 4 'bones and a tuba? Highlighting the premier jazz tubaist, Jim Self. With him, what you see is what you get: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/jim-self-...iscography << I'm not being different just for the sake of being different...and neither is he. Some tunes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ46C_CXeho
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWgZcoQiaLc << "Plays well with others"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crOpkaJ0nHc << Call it "post-bop" or "avant nuevo Classical" but do give a serious listen

I swear I'm not seeking out unusual instruments--they just happen along. As Akua Dixon did. Jazz cellist extraordinaire. Fresh to the US scene, with only 1 CD (she's had a quartet including her late sister for 40 years). I'd dearly love her and Esperanza Spalding to get together and exchange ideas... or Yo Yo Ma. http://akuadixon.com/ Some tunes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51jXOkANDVI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y24QHJCqod8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MFAu4LoXXI << A different take on this, you betcha

Makes me proud of my Celtic heritage--Ryan Cohan, jazz master pianist. Get in touch: http://ryancohan.com/calendar/ << Plays mainly Chicago area with some NYC. His sketchy Bio.: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/ryan-coha.../biography Skin in the game--just ordered The River (read the reviews)--he's brilliant solo or with others--a lesson Joey Alexander will need to learn. Some tunes, starting with a solo piano take on "Lush Life".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P2GKnzDCOw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzHF9ARp4SA << So laid back as to be nearly invisible--good writing though
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqQZxQOTfs4

Pimpin' the merch, an EPK on his newest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZh1lEAS5Ls

Like your Gypsy/Near East music filtered through a Jazz consciousness (think Django and Mr. Grappelli)? Then you are sure to like Gypsophilia. Their Site: http://www.gypsophilia.org/ << Tell SteveO they have 2 dates in NS coming up in Sept.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NiRPuDB0HY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gzNkxXrMhI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-RbdDr6C5Y
NOTE: Did I mention the group is Canadian and substantially female? No? Must have not been important then...
