Womens' Voices
#1
Dear Music discussion community,
I was looking to see if any of you could recommend me some female voices. I am talking the likes of Sheryl Crow, Shirley Bassey, Carly Simon, Sheena Easton etc.
If you have any recommendations please include them.
I would prefer music that is NOT pop (i.e. no pussycat dolls or britney or aguilera) but instead downbeat/jazzy/country/slow music where the lyrics are discernable, make sense and are not composed of "love, U, Boy, Heaven" or other teenie bullshit.
Thanks,
MC70

Hi MidnightCowboy,

Well those that know me know there are not too many female vocalists I like. I tend to go more for a male vocal, BUT .. there are a few that stand out for me and NO they are not pop teenie BS either ..

We live in the Golden Age of female singers. We are blessed by Dee Dee Bridgewater, k.d. lang (speaking of Canadians), Karrin Allyson and Roseanna Vitro...Here's a reasonable all-time list, many still with us: http://www.ranker.com/list/best-female-j...rs/rockboy
My faves (one listed above, one not): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lnQslFWzno A US Heartland woman and a classically-trained, excellent pianist
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lnQslFWzno << she did a killer Ray Charles cover album--worth your time to look up

Celine Dion, Lucinda Williams, Bjork, Adele, Norah Jones, Laura Marling...to drop a few! I really don't know of any NEW jazz singers of recent times of the last last 5 years, Esperanza Spalding is one.
The ultimate connection is between a performer and its' audience!

Whole-heartedly agree on this one. Though primarily a bassist, Ms. Spalding has the energy, the breadth of interests and the immense talent to be a major force for years to come.

C'mon folks--don't be a tease. Do like Palmer did and put up some links to your faves. The least we can ask...
