Click on the link below to find out how Peter Gabriel is putting a new slant on LEGAL free downloads. More power to his elbow, that's what I say!
http://www.we7.com/welcome
The embedded ads can be removed after a month, the files are DRM free and weigh in at CBR 192 kbps! I hope the bastard record companies are really squirming now....coz if they're not, they soon will be!

Looks too good to be true.
You can download tracks legally for free and onto your ipod. The artists get their money from the ads being placed.... How???? Ads costs Penny's these days on the web... Plus We7 needs to make money. How would they make enough money to provide this service?

I really don't know enough about it yet. Save to say that the most important feature (free mp3's) is here and now and is very welcome!

Is the site only containing unsigned artists at present? That was the bit on the welcome page I could not tell.

I'm guessing they would be unsigned coz I can't imagine label consent being given to the contrary. However, I think it is inevitable that more artists will move over.
Signed independent artists probably make 'buttons'. Neither that model nor this new one will prevent illegal sharing. However, by signing up to this model, each download would generate artist income.
Provided it grows big enough and attracts major advertisers, it's going to encourage lot's of bands to dip their toes. The cost of self produced albums is not prohibitive and compares well to the label's 'we've recovered our bit, there's you're £20!' contracts.
Ultimately, get Radiohead and/or Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) [both of who have expressed dissatisfaction with the current norm] on board and it would become very interesting to see who follows next.

Yep. Under the Ambient/New Age heading,
Global Communication - 76:14 and under Indie,
Baby Bird - The Original Lo-Fi (6 CD Box Set).
If these are from genres you appreciate, you should enjoy.
