What the guy is using is actually called a "Jazzbo" mandolin. jazzboCR, is that perchance where you got your username?
Does anyone know why the mandolin doesn't have more of a presence in gypsy jazz? I think it would go very well in the mix! Or does it, and am I just not listening to the right people? I mean, I think electric mandolins are making more of a presence these days, even outside of gypsy stuff, but classically I guess. Does anyone know more awesome players?

I agree with you about the mandolin; look into what Ricky Skaggs does with it, especially when playing with Bruce Hornsby --last night I posted on just that.

Jazz music is sometimes strange enough for some of the listeners, some musician take instruments and other where sing with any instrument. But if you take a quick look around then you see that there are many who kept there old jazz instruments with them.

Woah, those are all really good links, thank you! So it's actually quite an established thing? There's also an instrument called the Jazzbo mandolin that the guy is using in the link that I posted above. Just the maker's name I think, it's really just a semi-acoustic, 5-string mando.
