SteveO, I just bought that album then, all because of this thread
To add to the discussion, I'd like to show you guys this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bmXS7kpDRg
What the guy is using is actually called a "Jazzbo" mandolin. jazzboCR, is that perchance where you got your username?
Does anyone know why the mandolin doesn't have more of a presence in gypsy jazz? I think it would go very well in the mix! Or does it, and am I just not listening to the right people? I mean, I think electric mandolins are making more of a presence these days, even outside of gypsy stuff, but classically I guess. Does anyone know more awesome players?

No, I started using that nom du Internet because of this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_%22Jazzbo%22_Collins
I agree with you about the mandolin; look into what Ricky Skaggs does with it, especially when playing with Bruce Hornsby --last night I posted on just that.
These may help also: http://www.jazzmando.com/ and http://www.jazz-mandolin.com/ Here's a group: http://www.jazz-mandolin.com/ and a guy: http://www.donstiernberg.com/
Good mandoboppin' to ya!

I just came across a review of this guy: Chris Biesterfeldt http://inabluemood.blogspot.com/2013/12/...dolin.html Couldn't find much on him but all 5 customer reviews on the Usual Suspect were raves. His tune choices sure were gutsy. http://www.amazon.com/Urban-Mandolin-Chr...Descending

Jazz music is sometimes strange enough for some of the listeners, some musician take instruments and other where sing with any instrument. But if you take a quick look around then you see that there are many who kept there old jazz instruments with them.

Ah, I see!
Woah, those are all really good links, thank you! So it's actually quite an established thing? There's also an instrument called the Jazzbo mandolin that the guy is using in the link that I posted above. Just the maker's name I think, it's really just a semi-acoustic, 5-string mando.

And now jazz cello gets its due. Touched on briefly in an ensemble piece: http://www.music-discussion.com/showthre...g-quartets Not as unusual instrument as you might think--doesn't take much digging to find a goodly number.
Stephan Braun Stone jazzman who works every bit of his imagination and his instrument His Site is in German (the only official site and no way on-site to translate): http://stephanbraun.com/ Not much on him and the Usual Suspect only has 1 disc.
Tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZ9wOGp618A << Solo pieces--plays well with others...

Here's a harmonica player for you: Gregoire Maret Here's his Site: http://gregoiremaret.com/#/features << opens with music. Cutting in the Usual Suspect for the citizen reviewer comments--uniformly praising.: http://www.amazon.com/Gregoire-Maret/dp/...ref=sr_1_1

An instrument that I have always enjoyed in a jazz setting is a marimba or xylophone.
