Dave Stryker, guitar - jazzboCR - 08-12-2014 Probably the best guitarist most folks have never heard of (though they sure have heard him play). A decade in Stanley Turrentine's band and tenure-length in Brother Jack McDuff's before that. I use "tenure-length" advisedly--he is an Adjunct Professor at 2 universities, teaches privately and does workshops world-wide, and has one of the better jazz improv books. That he's not better known even with 31 CDs since '91 is due to recording on a Danish label and usually comes off as a sideman even in his own groups--he fronts a soul-jazz outfit and the organ or sax is prominent. All his albums are 4-star affairs (those graded lesser show better in the descriptions). He's done some surprising things--an odd-meter album, e.g.--and most are mainly self-written, but all please in some way.
