It was released as a single in 1964 and reached #1 on the United States charts. The song originally appeared on Vinton's album Roses Are Red in 1962. Bobby Vinton (born Stanley Robert Vinton, Jr.; April 16, 1935) is an American pop music singer of Polish origins. Vinton is the only child of a locally popular bandleader, Stan Vinton. At 16, Vinton formed his first band, which played clubs around the Pittsburgh area. With the money he earned, he helped finance his college education at Duquesne University, where he studied music and graduated with a degree in musical composition. While at Duquesne, he became proficient on all of the instruments in the band: piano, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, drums and oboe. Vinton's birthplace of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania is also the birthplace of Perry Como. His hometown named two streets, Bobby Vinton Boulevard and the shorter adjoining Bobby Vinton Drive, in his honor. Canonsburg town fathers had plans to erect a statue in his honor, but Vinton vetoed the idea noting that the $100,000 planned cost could go to far more important town needs. In 1964, Vinton had two #1 hits, "There! I've Said It Again" (a #1 hit in 1945 for Vaughn Monroe) and "Mr. Lonely". Vinton wrote "Mr. Lonely" during his service in the U.S. Army in the late 1950s where he served as a Chaplain's Assistant. The song was recorded during the same 1962 session that produced "Roses Are Red" and launched Vinton's singing career. It was released as an album track on the 1962 "Roses Are Red (and other songs for the young & sentimental)" LP. Despite pressure from Vinton to release it as a single, Epic instead had Buddy Greco release it and it flopped. Two years and millions of records sold later, Bobby prevailed on Epic to include "Mr. Lonely" on his "Bobby Vinton Greatest Hits" LP. Soon DJ's picked up on the song and airplay resulted in demand for a single release. "Mr. Lonely" shot up the charts in the winter of 1964 and reached #1 on the charts in December 1964. Epic then released an LP "Bobby Vinton Mr. Lonely", giving the song a unique claim to fame since it now appeared on three Bobby Vinton albums released within two years. The song has continued to spin gold for its author in the 45 years since it hit #1. Harmony Korine named his 2007 film Mister Lonely after the latter, and it is now also the basis for Akon's hit "Lonely." Lonely, I'm Mr. Lonely I have nobody for my own I am so lonely, I'm Mr. Lonely Wish I had someone to call on the phone Now I'm a soldier, a lonely soldier Away from home through no wish of my own That's why I'm lonely, I'm Mr. Lonely I wish that I could go back home Letters, never a letter I get no letters in the mail I've been forgotten, yes, forgotten Oh how I wonder, how is it I failed Now I'm a soldier, a lonely soldier Away from home through no wish of my own That's why I'm lonely, I'm Mr. Lonely I wish that I could go back home Songs People Should Hear - Music Head - 08-03-2010 ![]() YouTube - Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons "Rag Doll" 1964 from wikipedia "Rag Doll" is a popular song written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio. It was recorded by The Four Seasons and released as a single in 1964. The single reached number one on the U.S. pop chart in July of that year and remained in the top position for two weeks. The song was quite an accomplishment for Crewe and Guadio and the Four Seasons, ascending to the top of the charts during 1964, "the year of The Beatles," a tough time for U.S.-based pop acts to have chart success. According to songwriter Bob Gaudio, the recording was inspired by the activities of a young girl as he was stopped in traffic in Manhattan. As he waited for the traffic signal to change, a dirty-faced girl proceeded to clean the windshield of his automobile for some spare change. When Gaudio reached into his wallet, he was surprised to find that all he had were notes , and none of the bills was smaller than $20. He gave the girl in tattered clothes a $20 bill. (The amount of the bill is unsure as Gaudio has also said it was a $5 and a $10 on different occasions). Her look of utter astonishment stayed in Gaudio's mind as he approached the recording studio. "Rag Doll", with a few tweaks by Bob Crewe, was the result. The B-side was the original version of "Silence Is Golden." In 1967 the song was a number one hit in the UK Singles Chart for the English band The Tremeloes. The title means "my beloved" in Italian. Authorship of the song was credited to "Tulio Trapani and Lee Lange." In reality Lee Lange was a pseudonym for record producer Bunny Lewis, and Tulio Trapani was the nom de plume of the song's co-writer and arranger Mantovani.[1] In 1965 it was recorded by Jay and the Americans for a #4 chart hit in the U.S. Jay and the Americans was a pop music group popular in the 1960s. Their initial lineup consisted of John "Jay" Traynor, Howard Kane (né Kirschenbaum), Kenny Vance (né Rosenberg) and Sandy Deanne (né Yaguda), though their greatest success on the charts came after Traynor had been replaced as lead singer by Jay Black. They were discovered while performing in student venues at New York University in the late 1950s. They auditioned for Leiber and Stoller, who gave the group its name. In the manner of the time, Leiber and Stoller wanted to extend this to "Binky Jones and the Americans," but Traynor declined to be known as Binky Jones his whole career. He instead offered up "Jay," a family nickname, and it suited everyone. Cara Mia why must we say goodbye?
