He's tremendously versatile, isn't he ? I grabbed two of his A Day in New York (sort of bosa nova ish) and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (It's not Christmas music..we haven't even had sumer yet ! rain again in Dartmouth...day 29 out of 35....sunny tomorrow maybe).
Two very distinctive albums. Is Ryuichi Sakamoto considered popular or fairly obscure ? How did you discover him ?

I was working on an engineering project and we had some Japanese software engineers on the site. An interpreter by the name of Chigusa used to do all the translation for us. One day we got around to discussing music and she mentioned Ryuichi Sakomoto and I thought I would give it a try. Checked him out on the web and bought a couple of CD's. Will dig out the titles one day. I have a mountain of CD's and no catalogue/filing system in place so I can never find what I want to listen to.

And yes, he can't be pigeonholed, which is what I really like about him. He's pretty well known in Japan. Not sure about the rest of the world.

I know him chiefly from Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. Sakamoto had a hand in the soundtrack, and also acted as Yonoi, the arseholish prison camp commandant.
I've never heard any of his albums, but know that he was also involved in some critically well received albums with Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Found it - Mototronic - the album title does not really do the music any justice. And the guy I mentioned previously in the thread but could not remember is David Sylvian. A stunning EP.

you might be surprised to know I have three of David's albums Jerome...

both of the above albums are fantastic IMO,
the third, "gone to earth", I bought that some time ago but still haven't got round to hearing it yet.
