During a rehearsal, conductor Sir Thomas Beecham thought that his female soloist was playing less than adequately on her fine Italian cello. He stopped the orchestra and declared:
"Madam, you have between your legs an instrument capable of giving pleasure to thousands, and all you can do is scratch it!"
