Can perfection be achieved?

"Can perfection be achieved?"

Nearly every day I scroll across people's accounts on music rating websites from profile to profile, and 99.99% of the time that person has given at least something a perfect score, whether that's an album or a single. But me? Never. Not in any write-up, and here I'll not only explain why but I'll also tell you why I think the movie "Everything Everywhere All at Once" is perfect despite the statement I just made. Read on and I'll explain.

---

I believe that improvement is always possible in basically every task that can't be factually completed to the fullest, most perfect extent. It's not necessarily saying that an artist will always have a problem with their music; it's just saying that they can evolve it more past the point of what they did, whether it's lyrically, production-wise or in any way.

Another thing people ask me is, "If you can't rate music a 10/10, then why never 9.9/10? What does that mean for you?" Well, to me, those scores are achievable but almost impossible; to get the closest decimal point would be to get the closest to perfection without actually being perfect, which would basically be the best song of all time, and for me? I just haven't found that song yet. Currently my favourite and highest-rated song of all time is "Die For You" by Joji at a 9.6/10, and to ever get to a 9.9/10, it would have to be the best song I've ever heard by the time I die, and with that being said, it still might not be there. You see, perfection can only truly be achieved factually, for example, getting an answer correct on a quiz or winning in rock paper scissors. That's possible.

Now you ask, why is the movie "Everything Everywhere All at Once" perfect? How can perfection be shown in a movie if movies aren't the same as the examples I showed? I'll tell you how, but beware, it'll involve some spoilers for the movie's plot:

In the movie the plot involves being in the reality you are in; basically, there's "the multiverse", which often involves being in different worlds where what you imagine happens, and what's happened is often curated differently. That means every single movie "mistake" can simply be passed off as part of the multiverse and sometimes as a character thought/move, which is absolutely genius if you ask me. Not only that, but the movie in general is also stunning and is completely a must-watch. I could talk for HOURS about how the movie is one of the most genius things ever made, and it goes a LOT deeper than that example.

Anyways, thanks for reading! And maybe I'll do a pt. 2 on why I think songs can be a 0/10.

"Bad attention span: final boss"

A few months ago I discovered something that gave me a good laugh, so I wrote it down in my notes as something that I could write about. Little did I know that it would sit in my notes folder like food dropped under the bed; it was old and dusty... and after a little dig in my notes, I rediscovered the idea, so, like classic me, I thought it would make somewhat of an entertaining post.

----

When scrolling, I saw an app advertised that appeared to offer a questionable service... When I say "questionable", I'm not talking about the "sus" kind of questionable; this isn't a "Laura is 5 miles from your area" kind of situation. This is more like a "The BBC cancelled my favourite show?! What on earth will I do?" kind of questionable.

Anyways, this app was a music app that offered to cut the part you want out of songs, so for example (and an advertised example), if you don't want to hear a song build-up, then you can just skip to the hook and have that part loop over instead of having to hear the build-up or outro. Now, this has caused backlash from both sides; let me explain...

On one hand there are "the haters"; they argue that a song's full structure is important and cutting out parts creates a more brainrotted generation which just looks for hooks. And if I'm being honest, I side with this group of people… Like, yeah, another person's listening habits don't harm me, but this whole app is just so stupid that it still pisses me off. Let's be honest, though, the only people using this app are TikTok music addicts who are sick of hearing the buildup on "Skibidi Phonk" and instead want to unlock full mewing potential by, let's say, skipping to the hook? You know how absolutely stupid that sounds?

Now let's see the second side, the lovers. These are the people who are sick of hearing 15-second build-ups and want to instead skip to the drama, the juice, the part that makes them wet. Etc. They argue that the hook is the most crucial (and only important) part of enough songs that downloading an app to manage this is crucial. And as you can probably guess, I DON'T agree with this side… I mean, how do you just listen to a minute-long hook over and over anyway with no compliments to the sound? And what about if you plan to see them live? What will you say then? "Mummy, MUMMY! I don't remember "All Too Well" being 10 minutes?? I only remember 15 seconds!" Or how about when you're doing karaoke to sing along? What if you're in Squid Game and must recite all the lyrics or get shot by the doll thingy? I said, 'What if?' WHAT IF.

Anyways, I'm excited to hear your replies and opinions. I'll be nice to everyone who gives me a genuine opinion instead of leaving a comment that sounds like a Nicki Minaj X insult.

Oh, and I'd also like to clarify that the "shots" in this write-up are all over-exaggerated jokes of my actual opinion. If you do actually like "Skibidi Toilet", then I'm sure you're a high intellectual individual who ranks among Einstein and such science professors, so don't be pissed. Anyways, byeeee!

SWAG - Justin Bieber - Mellope Album Review

1. All I Can Take (4/10)

A summery-ish, slow-moving song where Justin's tuning doesn't really add to the song, and as a whole the song feels flat-out dull.

2. DAISIES (5.2/10)

Bland R&B with some guitar that doesn't give much but only matches the R&B energy. The small save for me was Justin's vocals providing the signature smoothness that Bieber is known for.

3. YUKON (7.2/10)

Ok, we're working with something. The way the mix started was making me think that this was going to be another lazy "DAISIES"-type "ballad, but instead I think the mixing went well. Of course, this still is kind of basic, but it has a sweetness to it with the feminine slow vocals on top of the acoustic love song. It all felt ever so simple, but it still had a bit of Justin's charm.

4. GO BABY (6.9/10)

This felt heartfelt, and whilst it has an appeal of meaning, I think critically speaking this isn't his finest work. I'll take it, though.

5. Things You Do—Justin Bieber (7.8/10)

"Things You Do" talks about the weight small things can have in a relationship; it does this in a similar formation to the rest of the album, but in a simplicity that can be sweet. A good song for sleeping.

6. BUTTERFLIES (7/10)

The song starts with Justin's viral "Money" clip where he tells paparazzi that they just care about money; the song then goes into a light and easy listen that includes a more pop-friendly side of Justin.

7. WAY IT IS (Ft. Gunna) (7.9/10)

I like this type of Gunna better; he feels more composed at a relaxed level where you can really process the song and soak it in, and I genuinely think this was a good rap feature. He helped bring out a weightlessness feel, not as much as Bieber, but he still did.

8. FIRST PLACE (7.6/10)

Another song about relationships where Justin feels like he has somewhat of a passion in the music, I feel like some of these tracks (like this one) are trying for the lyrical appeal.

9. SOULFUL (Ft. Druski) (4/10)

A less than 40-second yapping session where Druski repeatedly mentions how Justin got soul and that he's got a black soul... whatever that's supposed to mean.

10. WALKING AWAY (6.5/10)

A guitar-drum pattern that uses simple instrumental forms along with vocals that don't feel amongst the most natural from him, but despite that there's still some form of comfort here that makes me partially enjoy this.

11. GLORY VOICE MEMO (4/10)

This kind of does sound as if it was recorded on a worse device, with the shakiness and sound quality sounding a lot less than the others. This felt like a segment that could be taken off "SWAG."

12. DEVOTION (Ft. Dijon) (7.7/10)

It's like something from "Shawn" by Shawn Mendes but with a slow rhythm twist. A very dreamy acoustic song that sounds good for sleep, pretty walks, or a comfortable moment. Instead of trying to add a rap feature or make it something it's not, the track and feature both feel like they have devotion to making something that truly highlights their vocal composure in a very real way; this song feels like a warm hug.

13. DADZ LOVE (Ft. Lil B) (7/10)

Just over two minutes of more relaxing soul where Lil B keeps up the pace in a good way; I also believe this is my first listen to Lil B.

14. THERAPY SESSIONS (Ft. Druski) (7/10)

Hot take, but I thought this was a good interlude. It's short but just the right length and conveys a message of constantly being asked if you're OK, which starts to make you not feel OK. This is all done in a friendly and light-hearted conversation that adds a breath of humour and connection to the album.

15. SWEET SPOT (Ft. Sexyy Red) (3.8/10)

DAWG WHAT IS THIS??? ??? The album was going down a lovely route, and then suddenly it comes to a halt with yet another artist featuring Sexyy Red, where she raps about putting male genitals up her butt, BUT WHY? Yeah… I can admit that Justin's lines had a little groove and the right amount of summer sexiness, but Sexyy came in so open with her lyricism that it doesn't fit the cuteness of the album but instead feels like a sex worker is going overtime on the clock and wants to get their job done ASAP.

16. STANDING ON BUSINESS (Ft. Druski) (6/10)

Druski is a really funny guy; I mean, it's a sped-up clip of Justin's "Standing on business" video followed by Druski making a joke about how he pronounces it "Bihness." I'm sorry, but the joke actually slapped ?. It doesn't fit the album, but I'll rate it since it's actually funny.

17. 405 (6.1/10)

It's what we've heard already but with a few more pop elements.

18. SWAG (Ft. Cash Cobain) (2.5/10)

What even is Justin doing at this point? "Swag" sounds like a bowl of nothingness, with mumbling on top of a generic mix that sounds like the overlapping complimented nothing. And Cash Cobain as a feature? I'd rather not.

19. ZUMA HOUSE (7.1/10)

Lyrically, with the simple-to-understand way and tone, it reminds me of Billie Eilish, and even production-wise a little bit too, but without the dark hints. The little mumble feels like it adds to the song's feel, and the slow production gives a sense of realness to it.

20. TOO LONG (5.9/10)

It's like "Yukon," but with more of a Chris Brown-ish kind of vibe and less sweetness; unexpectedly, it also felt repetitive of the current album's style.

21. Forgiveness—Mark Winans (8/10)

A shorter and more impactful ending that ends as a gospel outro, which doesn't feature Justin. The singing is soothing to the ears and has the heavenly factor too.

OVERVIEW:

The more I listened to this, the more apparent it became… the simplicity of the album is what fuels the emotions. When I finally wound down and took a walk, or just sat and chilled, I could finally appreciate the album a lot more, and those sweet moments where Justin was connected to the music. Sure, that doesn't make up the whole album, which is my problem, but from time to time you pick up on a sound and you just get it... you can feel the meaning and reasoning, and you feel a part of something special. Critically? Not his finest work. But I'll lay down the big critic perspective and back this a little. Not bad.

Not bad.
As a standalone song it's partially boring, but listening after "Sheep," for example, puts you in the mood for Pink Floyd, where I could more truly appreciate the magic around the music. I think for a folk track like this, placing it outside of parts would be better though.
The move between different sections feels slow and occasionally worthwhile, but in the end I don't feel like I got enough action out of this compared to the other songs. It's still great but could easily be shortened.
Now what I really want to talk about is the meaning, where they touch upon the topic of the "lower class" society brainlessly following orders without hesitation, and it's so fitting that I come across this song at the time of the Trump and Epstein files drama, along with the Diddy news, because let's be honest, they want to brainwash us all. And I think the song going into a darker tone was the point in this song that the meaning flowed through more than ever, with it providing a good atmosphere before kicking back up into a groovy, more hardcore rock style. This song is truly a rollercoaster and an amazing one too! 10+ minutes of time certainly not wasted.

1. IGOR'S THEME (9.2/10)

There are so many distinct and well-placed parts of this song that it feels unreal! The bass, the backing vocals from Lil Uzi Vert, and the millions of random sounds put in just feel like they shouldn't slot well, but somehow Tyler made it into one of the best openers ever. I'm in shock.

2. EARTHQUAKE (7.3/10)

Playboi Carti's uncredited verses felt like a blur to the neo-soul and dreamy R&B chords. As much as I would prefer the song without him, I can't say that he completely ruined it.

3. I THINK (9/10)

A creative blend of soul into a disco-alternative song that highlights how Tyler can manage control without giving up his production values. Also love the backing singers!

4. EXACTLY WHAT YOU RUN FROM YOU END UP CHASING (6/10)

A short interlude where Tyler talks about the song's title and obstacles, along with a clapping and chanting background sound.

5. RUNNING OUT OF TIME (8.1/10)

A song where the title is exactly what the song is about: running out of time, specifically in a relationship. This song has a psychedelic sound that takes the stage along with experimental rap. The production on this feels a lot less beefed up and has less to it; that's not always a bad thing, but in this case I would've liked him to go a little more all out.

6. Magic Wand (7.1/10)

Featuring the viral psychedelic pattern, Tyler states this as his favourite song. I personally wouldn't rank it near his best, but I can still understand why many would have it in their playlists. It feels like one of the most real songs, where the focus shines through on Tyler's West Coast rap rather than going straight for the beat to impress, despite the beat still having many quality factors. Overall though, not in my favourites by him, not even near.

7. A BOY IS A GUN* (9.2/10)

The female vocal sample along with the lively and ear-catching piano was honestly some of the best piano playing I've heard in a while, and those vocals? They place it in a way that doesn't overpower the song but lets the beauty of the composition flow through, which I would prefer.

8. PUPPET (8/10)

Still experimental and still in style as Tyler effortlessly wins the crowd with another uncredited vocal feature; this time it's Kanye West.

9. WHAT'S GOOD (8.5/10)

A song that has a mysteriously distorted sound with the synths constantly going up and down in weird ways that sound aggressive and work with the pattern of intense drums.

10. GONE, GONE/THANK YOU (8.5/10)

Two beautifully crafted songs with concepts and meaning that showcase not only how well Tyler can showcase a sample but also how much quality he can maintain it at.

11. I DON'T LOVE YOU ANYMORE (8.1/10)

Tyler tries to forcefully accept that he doesn't love someone despite it being false; he says this in a traditional Tyler fashion with experimental synth production.

12. ARE WE STILL FRIENDS? (8/10)

A glossy synth sound continues throughout the whole song, and near the end it builds up to a little more instrumental layout where rock guitars, drums, and a high-pitched yell can be heard. I love when music with a simple-to-understand meaning (like this one) has such artistic value. It resonates with you a lot more.

OVERVIEW:

Tyler showcases strong production across the board, with the whole album oozing with fine picks from funk, synths, and even samples! Lyricism-wise, this doesn't back down either, with the lyrics often providing a nice accompaniment to the experimental rap tracks. It's something that's highly replayable, especially for a surreal feeling.

Purple Rain—Prince—Mellope Album Review

1. Let's Go Crazy (8.9/10)

OOOOOOH Yeah, this is real good. The guitar riff mixed with a synth sound to make a strong lead opening song hits just the right amount of energy to ease you into an opening of what is hopefully going to be a promising album. Going heavy and straight in at track one was a bold choice, but Prince isn't an artist to shy away from big moves, so I get it.

2. Take Me With U (8.9/10)

Prince continues adding rock to his psychedelic pop, but this time in less of a heavy way and more of an eased way, with a female uncredited singer (Apollonia Kotero) adding a soulful serve to the classic violin and cello harmony that adds more life to the song that's already full of life.

3. The Beautiful Ones (7.4/10)

A well-polished new age soulful song that has a glossy sound that adds a vibrant sound as if it's live; it's full of life. I don't like how some of the screams are literally screeching and sound like a teenage girl is having a tantrum (which'll definitely bring down my score), but still good overall.

4. Computer Blue (9.1/10)

This is one of the best uses of the guitars I've heard in a song; it's roaring but not too roaring to overpower the use of the synths or the bass that provide nearly as much use as the guitars. This is truly a delight for the ears and yet another moment where Prince shows the world how he's capable of balancing so many things to make a good song.

5. Darling Nikki (7.5/10)

Fun fact: According to the song's Wiki page, this song's masturbation reference partly caused the invention of the parental advisory sticker. This song has a upfront feel like you're seeing it there compared to the glossy synth sound on some other songs, I like It but not nearly as much as some of the other things here.

6. When Doves Cry—Prince (9.5/10)

Within seconds my head was bopping to the funky clap-like loop, and when those vocals hit and the soul and keyboard came in, I immediately knew this was going to be an instant song I'd fall in love with. The song has a full production that's full of life, but through the groove it has a heartbreaking message of love breaking. Where Prince says, "What if I've become like my mother?" my heart broke. I cried, and I got goosebumps; this song is a rollercoaster and one of the closest songs to perfection. Just WOW. MUST LISTEN.

7. I Would Die 4 U (7.8/10)

Nice rhythm, very catchy hook, and another dose of the brand of synth-pop that makes viewers want to hear more Prince.

8. Baby I'm a Star (8.6/10)

It's like something from "Thriller," but with more of a kick that adds to the rock-funk fusion. The use of synths here was also once again extraordinary and completely benefited the song.

9. Purple Rain (9.5/10)

With the meaning of God's guidance in the 8-minute heavy rock, there are many noticeable parts to pick up on. Every piano note feels like it was tested thoroughly for the best order; the violin feels unreal. I can't even believe a backing band can create a harmony that transcends into something that is beyond reality. This is INSANE. One of, or possibly the greatest, album outros I've ever heard.

OVERVIEW:

This album isn't just incredible for its time; it'll always be incredible. "Purple Rain" has a mix of pop-rock with meaning and disco fusion that captures sadness and dancing even in the same song at times! The album feels slightly futuristic, with the sound giving us a taste of some funky and lively synths that feel like something that only few were known for and that soon became more common. I love this album with passion; I must return.

The song follows into a simple loop where the vocals take centre stage as the main part before having a small key effect near the end that switches between keys before fading. Good song, I can see the art in it.
4. Sunday (Ft. Frank Ocean) (7.5/10)

I didn't like Earl's flow, but as the song progressed, it kind of got better. I just don't like that style of rap as much.
The drums and the instrumental partly felt like a BandLab beginner, sadly, but I honestly think the effects of the deeper sound that sounds a little mysterious and hard to pinpoint really brought up my score of the song. And in terms of rapping-wise, this is definitely a step up from "Sunday."
6. Chum (7.9/10)
Onto the music, I'm not a Mac fan, so I wasn't expecting a high bar from this. As much as Miller always brings this edge to a song where his style is a little more wacky and out there, I don't really like that approach, and on this I'm not too keen on it either.
OVERVIEW:

I wouldn't go as far as to say that this is a must-return, but I must respect the level of effort and amount of time that sounds like this record has in it. It's definitely telling a story, and it's definitely got its own brand that has appeal… but the problem is that this is a little too uplifted into a good range by features (with quite a few songs that feel special... mainly features make it more interesting), but as a whole, I think I'll return to this; I just can't say it'll be at the top of the to-listen list. If you're into something conscious and maybe like Kendrick Lamar or Mavi (especially Mavi), then this could be more up your street. Although as someone who likes Kendrick, this is a little like him but not too much for me to like or feel something.

Pet Sounds—The Beach Boys—Mellope Album Review

1. Wouldn't It Be Nice (9/10)

Sadly adverts have ruined this song for me, as that's only where I've heard it, but hearing it on this album felt like a breath of fresh air. I realised this song's buildupis to a perfect key part that sounds fit for a beautiful summer. I refuse to let adverts ruin this for me, because by itself this song has some of the best-composed instruments that I've heard in a long time.

2. You Still Believe In Me (8.6/10)

The use of bicycle horns in the mix and lesser-used instruments really shows the length the band went to make their songs special, and the voice holds on this song are angelic and something straight out of heaven. Beautiful song; my only small complaint is that the horns and vocal holds shouldn't really overlap, in my opinion.

3. That's Not Me (8.8/10)

The opening, the main part, the ending… everything about this song was simplicity at its finest. Truly wonderful. It's also a good representation of the song's message of self-discovery.

4. Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) (9/10)

A song with vocals that make you feel like you're floating, along with strings that give the song the feeling of really old church choir music (and I mean the great church choirs), too. To describe this song as magical wouldn't be an understatement in the slightest. And for its time, this just adds to the impressiveness.

5. I'm Waiting For The Day (9.1/10)

The upbeat kicks in the beat along with the changing tone, which was quite fun and honestly felt like we've hit a new peak in the album. Great song; I think everything about this was at least great.

6. Let's Go Away For Awhile (8.5/10)

This was originally intended to have vocals (which I think would've fit the range of sounds better), but this still works on its own; the mix between instruments and sound is extremely impressive.

7. Sloop John B (8.7/10)

It sounds like a lot of the album's vocal harmonies but put together to create one that's possibly the best so far, definitely a highlight of the album currently.

8. God Only Knows (8/10)

A nice song with a similar resemblance and quality to the rest of the album. Definitely nothing different from what I've already heard, though still good.

9. I Know There's An Answer (7.3/10)

According to Wikipedia, this song is about the effects of drugs on the mind, and as much as I don't believe a background that sounds jolly and the tone was the best of this, the song still ends up sounding good for anyone unaware of the topic. But yeah, this could have a better blend.

10. Here Today (8.6/10)

Love the piano and trombones coming together to make one of the most addicting parts of the album so far; this is what should be charting in the 60s.

11. I Just Wasn't Made For These Times (8/10)

The amount of focus on the layers and key changes on these songs is incredible and pays off; this track proves exactly that, yet again.

12. Pet Sounds (8.1/10)

An array of different sounds that felt like a buffet but put into an instrumental. This song, I believed, was better as just an instrumental.

13. Caroline, No (8/10)

A really respectful outro where percussion instruments and flutes play a big part in helping the song's sad reflection on a love life.

OVERVIEW:

Despite the album dropping in quality in its second half, it still remained good all the way throughout the album, which is impressive, as most don't. This album excelled in quality for its time, especially with the limited musical knowledge and items available then, and it also has some really nice melodies that always tend to be backed by mostly well-chosen meanings too. I'd definitely return to this.

Good Kid, M.A.A.d City—Kendrick Lamar—Mellope Album Review

1. Sherane, a.k.a. Master Splinter's daughter (8.9/10)

A song reflecting the life of Kendrick's relationships and sexual encounters with one specific female, the song is classic Kendrick, and I love classic Kendrick, so it was a pleasant opener.

2. B*tch, Don't Kill My Vibe (8.5/10)

An on-point rap song that serves because it not only nails the vocal effects on the hook but also has surreal strings at the end that add to the art factor of the music that makes people like Kendrick.

3. Backseat Freestyle (2.2/10)

OOF. I was not expecting something this bad... the lyricism is terrible, and I get it's a freestyle, but it's as simple as not posting it because what even is "I pray my d*ck gets as big as the Eiffel Tower, so I can f*ck the world for 72 hours," and the lyricism is repetitive too, with the song feeling dragged on. Kendrick also sounds out of it with a lazy vocal performance that only adds highlights to the song that feels as thought out as a Cardi B throwaway.

4. The Art of Peer Pressure (9.2/10)

This song navigates the peer pressure of Kendrick trying to complete a bank robbery; the song's production really fits the conscious early. St2010s hip-hop does it in a way that doesn't feel overly trying but instead truthful and real.

5. Money Trees (Ft. Jay Rock) (7/10)

It's a shocker, but I honestly don't think this is near as good as people say. It's groovy, it's conscious, and it navigates the topic of wealth in an interesting light of production.

6. Poetic Justice (Ft. Drake) (8.4/10)

The female vocal inputs here and there add to the amazing feel this song gives, and even despite Kendrick easily giving better verses, Drake still gave a solid delivery that will remain under his best rapping performances to date.

7. Good Kid (8.3/10)

A composition that follows the rest of the album's form; if you like the rest, then you'll surely like this.

8. m.A.A.d city (Ft. MC Eiht) (9/10)

MC Brings this older and more traditional Black rap feel to the song, and Kendrick brings the emotion into a better setting as the song talks about growing up near fear and trying to stay alive. Also the production value is my favourite part of this; the switches are heavenly.

9. Swimming Pools (Drank)—Extended Version (8.4/10)

The song discusses the topic of drinking to fit in or "drowning the sorrow," and it does that incredibly well and emotionally. I think the tone for the hook could be altered to not sound the way it did, as that sways away from the emotional value, but I still see heavy appeal for this. Lamar is passionate on the topic, and if you listen closely to the lyrics, you get that; lyrical value is what's the strongest here.

10. Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst (9/10)

This song explores the journey of Kendrick with his religion and gang life in a 12-minute-long track. The song has every value of artistic with the deep meaning, core conscious rap production choices, and a song that doesn't feel rushed and instead moves slowly through a feeling that moves you.

11. Real (Ft. Anna Wise) (8.9/10)

This song is artistic and valuable in so many ways; the tone feels more steady, and the meaning symbolises some of the things that feel real to him. The song is 7 minutes plus of rap luxury, with the composure and production not being overproduced yet still managing to make something that has become the signature style of Kendrick. The songs are real and important, and I'm quite shocked it's considered the worst on the album.

12. Compton (Ft. Dr. Dre) (8.9/10)

Beautiful conscious jazz-rap with a synthesiser on the vocal ending that sounds heavenly.

OVERVIEW:

[size=small]Lyrically this album is a masterpiece, and production-wise it's the definition of simplicity at its finest. Kendrick has possibly the best storytelling in the industry, and this album shows his strongest form! Crazy that he followed this up with TPAB (which is one of the best rap albums ever)

so as you all know from "what are you listening to" albums i have posted in the past (and today) Lynne and myself are huge Leo Sayer fans and between us we own ALL 17 of his studio albums, tour programs and posters (i have seen him at least half a dozen times and Lynne a couple of times over the decades)

anyway, about eight weeks ago he announced an Aussie tour for September of this year so i jumped at the chance to once again buy tickets to see this fabulous entertainer once again for myself and Lynne to see him together for the first time.
i managed to get tickets in the eighth row almost dead centre of the stage in this little 2500 seat theatre here in Perth.
we were both over the moon at the location and proximity to the stage we managed to get.

so a few days ago, friday morning to be exact, i sent an email to Leo's management saying words to the effect of:
"i know you hear this all the time with people saying theyre huge fans of Leo Sayer but we are. we own all of his albums and was wondering if there was a chance that whist he is in Perth if we could possibly arrange a 'meet and greet' get a couple of our vinyl LP's signed and maybe a photo with Leo?"
in the email i included a photo of us holding his entire albums collection to prove we own all of his albums.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
i told Lynne what i had done and she said, "like youre even going to get a reply....not!"
and i said, "well if i dont we havent lost anything"
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
so,
to finish the story....
by friday evening i received an email from Leo's Tour Manager and it basically said:
your original email was forwarded on by Leo's Management company and i would be more than delighted to set up a meeting with Leo for you and your partner. let the door people know when you arrive at the venue and they will get word to me and i will be more than happy to meet you and arrange an after show meet with Leo, regards...."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

i just thought it was really great that in the space of a few hours that my email had been forwarded on to the right person and that they actually responded positively and promptly

so lets hopeit pans out and Leo Sayer is a decent human being

1. Hammer (7.3/10)

Her accent felt like it was going to flood through, but thankfully it didn't because I think it makes the songs worse. "Hammer" is from Lorde's upcoming album "Virgin" and continues the alt-pop with artistic values. The song talks about love and identity and gives the song the meaning it feels like it needs. Hopefully the rest of "Virgin" can at least be as good as this.

2. What Was That (5.5/10)

I've always found her voice partly annoying, but I think it shows a lot more on this.
Alt-pop, which showcases that Lorde's album may not be as good as we think.

3. Shapeshifter (8.1/10)

The song has some great strings in the background that add to the surreal feeling of the song. The lyrics are about personal identity and relationship issues, which feel appropriate with the choice of sound.

4. Man Of The Year – Lorde (7.7/10)

Her accent doesn't come through as much on this (which I prefer), and it serves as a big improvement from "What Was That". It contains her artistic alt-pop sound, which makes her albums so strong, and if she keeps this up, then we could see the 2025 "Melodrama".

5. Favourite Daughter (8.1/10)

Lorde called this the hardest song to make on the album, and I can clearly see there's so much effort; the song's hook is uplifted with every component coming together to create an experience just like "Man of the Year" but with a new meaning.

6. Current Affairs (7/10)

The electronic input near the end was a strange and unique choice that didn't pay off, aside from the fact that the song follows the form of the previous songs. Good.

7. Clearblue (7.6/10)

The meaning is so real; it's emotional and provides an amazing storytelling side, but now it feels like production-wise she's following the same steps to make similar-sounding songs. It's still great, but a switch-up would be nice.

8. GRWM (7.5/10)

I don't have much to add to this; if you like the rest, then you'll probably like this.

9. Broken Glass (8/10)

The song's effects on the lyric "Broken Glass" felt a lot clearer and refreshing, adding to the song's score.

10. If She Could See Me Now (8/10)

Definitely the most interesting production yet, the synths, keyboards, electrics and key switches were just making the song burst with the life that "Virgin" craves.

11. David (9.3/10)

Casually ending the album with the best song on it is an interesting choice, but I'm also one for a great outro! The emotional value is brought up in the most powerful way to express vulnerability, and the song just feels like one that is the best too close, on a note that makes you zone off (in an amazing way) – true art.

OVERVIEW:

A record that shows Lorde still has her shine, with the album having well-approached storytelling, mostly good progression of the sound and, of course, the Lorde we know and love.

BEST – David
WORST – What Was That?
