What's so special about Vinyl? :)

Hello, my name is Nay.

I'm a 3rd year Graphic Design student working on a project.
We were asked to create a project that becomes a homage to something that is unappreciated or forgotten about and I picked Vinyls.

I don't know why, but I love them. There is just something so pure about the sound and so spiritual about the ritual of playing and storing them.

I need to generate some interest from people that feel the same way?
If youre a collector, or you find yourself thumbing through records in a record store week in week out, please get in touch and tell me why you are so in love with the format.
I need some tear-jerking testimonials from people that are fanatical about vinyls.

My end result will hopefully be a photo book which will be accompanied by your beautiful words.
I want this book to really celebrate the ritual of playing vinyls and the love that people still have for them.
I wish I was born in the era when vinyl was king, I really do.

I hope to hear back from people.

Well I don't have any tear-jerking stories but the biggest thing about vinyl was the gatefold sleeves and covers. There is a thread about this somewhere in this forum but I can't remember where? As for the vinyl itself - I prefer CD's. Cannot understand why people like to listen to clicks, scratches and buzzes when they can get the same thing with a clean background.

...the problem i have with cd sound Jerome is....

because older music, like material from the 50s-late 60s can at times sound hollow and sparse on cd as opposed to sounding 'fuller' on vinyl...
i guess it has something to do with recording processes in the old days...8-track,4-track,mono maybe???
but modern music sounds way better on cd,again...recording processes maybe...?

i agree with your covers comment...you simply cannot get the full visual effect of great album covers via a cd cover...

Neil Young has developed a new sound system that gives the full studio sound as opposed to the relatively compressed sound of digital, and a lesser extent cd...

apparently all four major record labels are looking at the product very positively, i believe there have been about a dozen albums already recorded to accomodate the Neil Young "pono" system...

if it takes of and gets a go ahead for full production the consumer should hear a clearer more robust sound through their ears as long as they purchase the system.

things like Dire Straits sound way better on cd...their music was destined for crystal clear sound IMO...!

back to vinyl again....

there is something special about not only the album covers on vinyl but also, the inserts are better....

plus i think vinyl takes us back to our childhood, brings back memories...

everybody here knows I love it
around 3500 in my collection
my cd count is far behind but I can see it catching up one day
unless they go completely digital on us
then, I'm out of the game
not sure why I prefer vinyl
the touch, the feel................no wait, that's cotton
the album covers + liner notes, I could see and read them with vinyl, not so with cd's
as far as the vinyl itself, it feels like I am holding more substance in my hands
and you could read the record label, tracks, writer and time usually
I love to hold them by each edge and shake them
sounds like thunder
sound quality, sorry, a new vinyl, a new cd, I can't tell the difference
or maybe I should say, it doesn't matter, they are both excellent.
obviously digital is better, right?
or is it just................different?

As for vinyl versus digital CD, I have heard vinyl played on a high end stereo system and then a CD,,,Ican not detect te sound quality difference?..therefore I don't prefer or favour one over the other As mentioned previously in other threads and also in this thread , the covers, liners with lyrics, and overall packaging of vinyl records is far more superior than CDs! Some things the CD has an advantage over vinyl = no surface or popping noise, no skipping, no warping and the convenience of not having to flip the record over after only 15 to 20 minutes!!!!..lol! These days I go for the occasional CD buoyed by generous gifts from my kids and MD members!!!!..otherwise I am content on going to You Tube, listening to music clips on MD or streaming on Grooveshark!

I like the large album covers, liner notes etc. And while it does sound different and maybe not as good it gives me the excited feeling I used to have when I fell in love with music and got a new album.

For me personally, the happy medium (or perfect scenario) was when PF released their 'immersion' box sets. CD's enclosed in an LP sized box with booklets and memorabilia. Had the same feel of opening an album in the seventies. A sense of discovery as opposed to just a product to be consumed. A tactile objet d'art.
