The Live Show Thread
#1
So I was thinking that there really should be a thread dedicated to the concert going experience. You know, a place where we can list off and review the shows that we've recently seen or brag about the shows for which we just scored tickets. My only problem was that I really did not know where to put it. Should there be a thread in each folder? Should it all be kept in one place? I think that this will do for the time being.

Now I want to know what shows everyone has seen over the past year. I know that there were times where I would see at least one or two per week for the span of a month, and I am sure that many of you could still easily make me jealous with tales of performances that you were able to see.

Come on! Everyone likes to brag! Let's hear it!

I think this is a good idea, although I'm not a frequent concert go-er, usually about once a month - just depends on who comes to Belfast/Dublin and when.

Can I just boast then about the really good Biffy Clyro concert I was at on Sunday? Smallish venue and sold out for months. I'm not a huge fan but had heard they were pretty good live so 3 of us went. Just a great rock concert - very little chat just lots of songs played with gusto and a nice acoustic session half way through. Played for a good two hours. Have been listening to some studio albums by the band since and they are positively dull by comparison.

Funnily enough the venue is part of the Queens University Student Union and was the first time I've been back there since graduating. I was reminising that I use to attend Terry Hooley's Reggae Discos (!) every Tuesday night in the same hall when I was a student - so good music - good memories and good friends!

Yup, I agree this is a good thread.

Major shows this year:

- Roger Waters in London. A fantastic night with my musical hero & his band. Included a full play through of the Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon. Doesn't get much better than this...

- ...Except for popping my Radiohead cherry at Victoria Park in London.
I've longed to see them live for years, and wasn't disappointed. Excellent weather, dazzling music, wicked lighting, and a crowd with a real love for the band. Best gig of 2008 for me.

- Neil Young, plus an impressive supporting cast. Again, this is one of my musical heroes, and he was superb. Day was spoiled a little by good ol' British inclement weather.

And I've just secured tickets for Bob Dylan in April next year, again in London. Haven't seen him live for nearly 25 years, and thought we ought to see him live again before it's too late...

I'm really jealous about the Bob Dylan tickets. It's been a few years at least since I've seen him and it was an outstanding show.

I'm still recovering from last night's AC/DC show. Great stuff! It was a wonderful way to end my concert going for 08 and it was also the loudest of them all. Smile

Other shows that I've seen this year...

Radiohead
The Cure
R.E.M. w/ Modest Mouse
Crue Fest
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Journey/Heart/Cheap Trick
ZZ Top/Brooks & Dunn
Nicole Atkins
The Bridge

I feel like I might be forgetting an important one at the moment, but there were of course many random shows for local acts as well.

The line-up for shows over the first few months of 09 is looking pretty nice so far though.

Ani DiFranco
George Clinton & P-Funk
Morrissey
Cowboy Mouth
Ryan Montbleau Band
Mother's Finest
Cross Canadian Ragweed

Just back from the Kerrang Relentless Tour (!) a UK 'rock' magazine organised series of concerts - In Case of Fire, Black Tide, Bring Me the Horizon, Dir En Grey and Mindless Self Indulgence - a fairly varied bag.

I went with my kids, some of their friends and three of my friends which made a bit of a motley crew (and included a friend of mine who's 5 months pregnant).

Missed most of In Case of Fire, Black Tide aren't really my thing but put on a good show - I really dislike BMTH but the lead singer got smacked when he crowd-surfed so that was entertaining, Dir En Grey took an age to set up and obviously take themselves really seriously but I ended up really enjoying them and MSI - sorry I love them! so entertaining, they never disappoint.

- It may not be the most worthy line up but it's be hard to beat a night full of good craic

oohhh good thread!!
One I am sure I will post on often. I am always hitting up some live show.
Next Friday I am off to the city to interview Rev Theory and no doubt catch the show. So, more later.

And, I will add a list from 2008 soon.

Well 2008 was a fairly busy year for me. Mind you, it seems every other weekend or so (give or take) I am off to some club to check out a local (Canadian) act, but I guess to most folks, those don't really count, since they are not "big" stars.

BUT, last year I attended the following (either as a ticket buying fan, or as a correspondent for the magazines I managed at the time):

The Odds (Canadian alt/power pop band)
The Trews (Canadian rock band)
Central Music Fest (2 days of great blues and roots music)
Crue Fest (Motley Crue, Buckcherry, Papa Roach, SIXX:A.M., Trapt)
Colin James
Sophmore Jakes (Canadian punk/rock band)
Tom Wilson
Barney Bentall

For 2009, there isn't TOO much on the horizon yet, but it's still very early.
Next Friday I am off to interview Rev Theory (and no doubt catch the show) as a planned feature for the second issue of The Portal Magazine.

Who knows what 2009 will bring, but I am confident I will end up front row centre somewhere along the way.

By far the best concert I went to this year was Jonny Lang!! I saw him at the House of Blues and he was so passionate and inspirational!

I am hoping to see Kieth Urban when he comes to the House of Blues in Hollywood... I love seeing show at the HOB... so intimate Smile

Well the interview, and concert went well with Rev Theory last month.
That interview will be featured in the April issue of The PORTAL Magazine.

Next month I am off to Canadian Music Week in Toronto.

Easily the second biggest music event in Canada (with our Juno Awards - our "Grammys" being the biggest), Canadian Music Week is a Music festival, conference, and exhibition with thousands of music industry participants from around the world. 350 bands in 35 clubs over three nights.

The first event I will be attending is Indie Night In Canada, a kickoff party to start things off. Indie Night in Canada is 18 bands on 2 stages, 1000 ticket holders and 250+ industry folks, all getting together to celebrate Canadian Indie music.

The rest of the week will be countless of artists performing, with lots to see and hear, with the show I am waiting to see .. Papa Roach with opener .. Rev Theory. It should be an amazing show!

I will fill everyone in, once I get home and recuperate!!
