Fleet Foxes
#1
I'm sure that everyone here has heard at least one or two Fleet Foxes songs over the past year. Let's face it, there's been a lot of buzz behind this group and anyone who involves themselves even mildly in the alt/indie scene has surely at least gotten a whiff of it. Of course, big buzz does not always equate to genuinely good music.

With that in mind, I'm just curious to hear some opinion of this band and their self titled release. I have to admit that I checked them out due to pure curiosity and immediately hated what I heard. I couldn't understand the appeal at all. No more than one month ago, a special lady friend of mine actually gave the CD to me as a gift. Through my teeth grinding and phony joy, I accepted the gift. For some bizarre reason, I decided to give the album a listen last week. Maybe it was the mood that I was in, but I actually started really enjoying the whole thing once I made it halfway through. By the time that the album ended, I was almost hating myself for how much I liked it. It's not for everyone, but I guess that there is a time and a mood for everything.

I like Fleet Foxes quite a bit. But then I like Neil Young and the Beach Boys and the like. I love harmonies and folk music. It reminds me of the band Black Mountain. Not in the way they sound but in that they take music from thirty, forty or more years ago and do a great take on it. They don't just sound like copy-cats.

I'd echo Jon's comments. It's good that something like this can make some waves in this day and age. I bought the album on the strength of magazine reviews, and after reading an interview where band leader Robin Pecknold (?!) said he was very proud of trying to re-introduce the art of singing.

It's interesting to read your comments about two very different reactions to the same album. I've long been wary of dismissing music on first listen. Time after time I've decided on first listen to an album that it's a considerable disappointment only to return later to find that it's actually very good. This also extends to seeing bands live.

For a very long time now I've refused to prune my record collection for fear of jettisonning anything good.

As you say, personal mood at the time is an important part of an individuals' response to music.

That's outstanding stuff. I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone. The music is so simple but just so captivating. I'm really taken aback at how this stuff has grabbed me.
