sad news...
#1
Dani's 12-15yr old Labradour/Great Dane cross had to get put down at the vets last night...

Jet, had been suffering from a bit of artheritis in his hips and hind legs since i have known him, but always managed to get around without too much trouble, however over the last couple of months his back end has become increasingly stiff when he tried to stand up after a sleep or from generally laying down...
he has had bad days since Christmas, and when we say that he's got to go to the vet he perks up fro several days, then goes down for for another couple...and on and on it goes...

however,
yesterday when i got back from work and went outside under the patio/verandah to have a smoke, listen to an album and check MD on my laptop he didnt come up to me like his younger friend Banjo did...i called him and he couldnt get up, his hind legs were all locked up and appeared deformed...God knows how long he had been like that laying in the sun with his black coat of fur, he couldnt even get up for water, i gave him some water and he attempted to move, dragging his back end on the gravel and concrete...enough was enough!
it was time!
so last night when Dani got home i told her that i thought it was time to do that horrible task of putting him down, fortunately she agreed and off we went to the vet....

RIP Jet...you are now free from your pain and free to run wild and happy in doggy heaven...long may you run...i wish i had known you when you were in your prime!

Nothing whatsoever wrong with you - you're just a human being. Being human. Happens to all of us and for some or other reason, which continues to escape me by the way, we want to suppress it. Screw that - let it out. And if there is anyone who dismisses it as being too soft, here's the scientific evidence. Grief, sadness and all those other emotions release chemicals (endorphins - I think) into the bloodstream so that you don't completely collapse and that is how Mother Nature keeps the body going when the brain wants to give up. End of medical lesson number 1. Dr Disney has retired.

Having said that, I am a real softie and especially don't like to see animals suffer. I look after about 13 stray cats (don't really have the grounds for larger animals otherwise the house would look like a zoo) that have been abandoned by their previous owners (human beings can be real shits sometimes) and I often have to go down to the vet to get one fixed, or fixed up, or put down because it's been in collision with a car or some dog has gotten hold of it. Costs an absolute fortune to keep this lot going and the food bill is just plain ridiculous. Would love to chuck up the corporate crap and run a wildlife sanctuary. But that's for the next life - rapidly approaching I might add...

Sooooooooooooooooooooo - if there is anyone on MD who enjoys hunting in any form I would prefer not to hear about it, thanks very much. Keep it to yourself. If it is done for survival I have no problem with it. If it is done purely for amusement, trophies or that wonderful word 'sport' you should be shot - repeatedly. i.e you should be subjected to the same misery you inflict on the animal.

Don't get me wrong - I don't have the cats in the house. The place would be ripped to shreds! But they get a square meal eveyday and their inevitable trips to the vet. Catching them is turning into a major military manouver everytime a trip to the vet is required.

We do the same thing here ! There's a dedicated group in the neighbourhood... Save The Cats that build shelters and provide food for the cats on a daily basis ! Too many to house although I knew a lady who had over 30 in and out of her house ,,,obviously she was called The Cat Lady! A friend of mine managed to capture George and take him to the vet to stitch him up and get shots, tests , etc . Now lucky George has an indoor home !
