A friend gave me their 'Still Life' CD and I really liked it. Thought it had a nice 'classical' feel to it and the guitars seemed almost 'bluesy' in places .
Metal isn't my genre at all so I wondered if there was anything similiar out there but with a bit less screaming (I don't mean to insult an obviously good band but what can I say - I love listening to lyrics).
Any thoughts/recommendations would be good.
Thanks
Opeth - Damnation (no growling at all)
Katatonia - Discouraged Ones and later stuff
Maybe some Anathema, but also the later albums (e.g. Judgement).

Opeth is my favorite band of all time. 1 year ago, if someone had told me this, I would have laughed at their faces. I hated growling initially, so stuck to the slower songs. Personally, I don't like the Damnation album. There are a few wonderful non-growling songs in other heavier albums. One of their greatest slow songs has to be 'To Bid You Farewell' - which incidentally is the song that got me totally hooked onto this awesome band.
Over the years, Opeth has progressed from death metal to progressive metal, yet at the same time have their unique acoustic touch. This sudden transition from growling to a soothing acoustic phase to a stunning guitar solo followed by a mellow piano solo in most songs is what makes Opeth great in my opinion.
