Sanborn was very popular in the 80s but I found some of his work too commercial...a musician has to eat!
Here's one of my favourite sax players!

Well, yes, but the convo then swings to a more European, formalist style, reminiscent of the Modern Jazz Quartet'S more Euro-leaning efforts. Biggest knock on the MJQ was they didn't swing--thus I find it with Mr. Garbarek. Here's Mr. Sanborn swinging his sox off: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ox3CPi9q7yw
Thing is, I didn't start off liking David Sanborn but that was due to my snobbishness. A closer listening later on showed that he snuck serious jazz licks into the most commercial, most banal material--because that's what an artist (as compared with a mere player) does. What's said here about him applies equally to Stanley Turrentine and to a lesser extent, Grover Washington, Jr. There was a whole stable at CTI records about the same (anybody with a dim opinion of Bob James, the ringleader of the CTI aggregation/aggravation, needs to get with this: http://www.allmusic.com/album/straight-up-mw0000183526 and his subsequent pressings. Like the others, once he'd made the money and got the power, he could do what he wanted, and they all returned to their jazz roots. Yes, soul jazz is jazz--ask Akiko Tsuruga.

It was decidedly unfair of me to provoke you as I did. I know Mr. Garbarek can swing--I just wanted you to post a clip showing it. I'm shameless...
