WHITEHORSE "whitehorse"
my opinion of this is that it is a cross between folk and what we term alternative.
not a bad album for a debut set, these guys have a future ahead of them if they improve on their
style over the next couple of albums.
really like the cover of Springsteen's "im on fire"...
i rate this one a steady 2.0 while allmusic rate it 3.5/5 or 2.1 on our system.

Musical marriages of real-life married couples can be a tricky thing -- the road is littered with the artistic and romantic casualties of husband-and-wife teams who tried to make the shift from domestic bliss to a shared sonic identity. Whitehorse, however -- a duo consisting of married Canadian singer/songwriters Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland -- seem to have beaten the odds. Their self-titled debut record manages to amplify the musical personalities of both artists successfully. McClelland and Doucet had each been tending their own solo careers for a decade or so before starting Whitehorse, and both artists had been making their own inroads on the Canadian roots music scene, but these tracks find them crafting a more forceful, visceral sound together. Not counting the brief sonic experiments that bookend the record, McClelland and Doucet offer up new versions of both the former's "Passenger 24" and the latter's "Broken," as well as three new songs and a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire" that lends the Boss' Born in the U.S.A. tune a bit of a Sun Records-era Johnny Cash feel. While both Doucet and McClelland have shifted back and forth from low-key, contemplative tunes to arch, angular productions on their own releases, the focus for Whitehorse seems to be a swampy, bluesy brand of roots rock, with a side order of alt-country/Americana thrown in for extra flavor. For another pair of troubadours, this might be a less successful move, but as they've both shown in the past, McClelland and Doucet both have strong enough songwriting chops to make their stylistic shifts feel like more than mere genre exercises.

Not bad but not something I would buy. But I'm sure this will appeal to many.

not knocking yours, but if I like everything on an album, it's on the list
those likes would turn to loves

i wouldnt knock your reviews neither MH, i respect your views and most of the time i do agree with you
probably liked it because it was "different" to all the other stuff around at the moment...thats why im hesitant to say i'll buy it,but i will remember the name for future releases...

I liked the cover you posted on Facebook but I didn't love it.....will probably look into the rest of the album even though I think I might be on my way out of my folky indie phase. I want to hear something with, for lack of a better word, balls. lol

WOW !!!!..one of my favorite new Canuck artists !!!!..so very glad for the recognition and review,Crazy !!!...I saw them perform one morning on a Canadian talk show and they really caught my attention !..I think it was their minimalistic approach ...very few instruments and a "lean" sound. most of my "new release" reviews are randomly picked from "allmusic",i usually pick an artist i know nothing about or have nevr heard of as it gives me a chance to explore something new, there are obviously exceptions though and do also review my favourite artists at times, most recently being Florence,ColdplayNeil Finn's "pajama club" and Noel Gallagher....however i picked this one because the cover had a "feel" to it, thought it night be good.
oh yeh...i love their harmonies also, forgot to put that in my review also....pretty sure they will get better in the coming two or three years and they have a lot going for them...well worth keeping an eye on IMO
het SteveO, if you ever see any new interesting Canadian artists on your talk shows let us know by posting links or reviewing the albums etc...as MH and myself cannot possibly listen to everything, think MH listens to one new album just about every day, while i may only do it a couple of times a week at best!
