Does the opinion of music critics influence your music selections at all ?
#1
I usually look at reviews and music critics' comments on certain albums that I have an interest in purchasing. Of course in this day and age one can listen to the music in question on the net.

Also reknown critics like Robert Christgau will comment on something and I will take notice,,,he stated that Pavement were the best group of the 1990s so I checked the group out...they're awesome but since I hate the word "best" in qualifying music I can't agree with him !

If the review is good then it encourages me to buy it all the more. However if the review is not favorable it won't matter anyway ! The fact that it got a bad review makes it even more interesting to purchase so I ignore the critics and buy it anyway.

I must say however that recommendations from our MD members usually are right on the mark for the most part !!!!...excellent service !!!!

i read a lot of reviews from "Q", "uncut", "rolling stone" etc, plus from "allmusic" online....but only to see how they compare to what i think of an album...and its always nice to have those proffessionals say the same thing things i do,
i also read buyers reviews at Amazon.com also but purely for interest..not to copy what they write!!!!

for the most part though, i take notice of my mate Corey and you guys right here on MD as like SteveO said....you are usually spot on

Reviews are interesting to read but they don't sway my opinion. I don't think.....

Sadly for me, I think you all sway my opinions more than any music critic lol

Not directly, but critics are a good filtering mechanism IMV.

Other than recommendations from here, I use AllMusic, plus Mojo magazine, and a good review from either of these will get me to investigate further.

Largely, AllMusic's reviews are reliable, so that's my main source of critic reviews...

Interesting to read this ...................I think it is fair to say that the reviews we post on here do seem to influence us !
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

very true

Back in my much buying years (60's,70's,80's). always read the critics (Rolling Stone, Spin, Trouser Press, Melody Maker), and I'm sure they influenced my buying.
Haven't read any regular in years., unless it's to put a "new release" post on here, then it's allmusic.

youre quite correct SteveO...."allmusic" reviews are for the most part pretty spot on....i know when i did the beginners guides to Finn,Weller and Neil Young that after i did my ratings that allmusic were fairly close to mine most of the time...when they werent i tried to figure out why?!

It is dependent upon the critic, I usually find one or two that have similar tastes to mine and then I at least give a listen to the ones they recommend, but I never buy anything without at least sampling a few songs

No, not ever...
There is an old saying that goes... "Those who can, do. Those who can't become critics!"
That said, if I read a critique or review by a musician, It does carry more weight, which is why I then apply the old saying, "Opinions are like (expletive deleted), everyone has one!"
Now if you could dig up Robert Johnson or Jimi Hendrix and ask them to comment on Buckethead, or Joe Satch... that would be different. Of course, I am probably full of it, because you know, opinions are like...

^ There's another quote I quite like, possibly from Elvis Costello:

Talking about music is like dancing about architecture.
