Hi all,
Hope you are all well?
Im not a song writer and in all honestly doubt i have the skill to ever become one, however i have a strange question. Which is better? Imagination or experiance? Please leave reasons behind your ansawer and i would be interesting to hear/read both sides of the argument.
Cheers

I guess experience would give an artist more depth in understanding what they write about, but on the other hand some subject matter may not lend itself to an artist having experience of it. Off the top of my head, something like space flight would be outside the experience of most writers, so imagination would be needed.
It always ticks me off a bit when very young artists sing about their relationships when they're barely old enough to know what the hell they're talking about...

I feel unclean mentioning this, but one of the songs that springs to mind is the old averal laveen (i realise i have spelt her name wrong) song, why you make things so complicated??

i'd have to say "experience" also as my favourite artists tend to write from experience

I think it's always best if you write what you know. Experience is best.

Experience is the canvas - imagination is the colour you put on it. Both are required to complete a picture that someone can appreciate.

Experience and imagination can both be used together or separately to create a song.

To me, writing music is about feeling, and feeling can come from both experience and imagination. When it comes to writing music it is kind of like a collage, you need the experience to give you the pieces and the imagination to stick them together.
