What rock groups have distinct English folk music backgrounds or influences ?
#1
Led Zeppelin,in particular,Jimmy Page, has collaborated with English folk singer songwriter Roy Harper,so it's interesting to speculate that Page had a keen interest in medieval English folk music...as obviously demonstrated throughout Stairway to Heaven !

English folk singer Sandy Denny has been featured on The Battle of Evermore. Gallows Poll smacks of folk music if you strip it down.

Led Zeppelin's folk period only lasted for two years on Led Zeppelin III (1970) and Led Zeppelin IV (1971) with a small smattering of folk rock. IMHO it is the period in which the band had folk(folk rock) on their radar!

Maddie Prior from Steeleye Span is on Incantations by Mike Oldfield

If I show you where...........Chris Simpson is on David Bowie tracks

Jimmy Page's connection with these things is partly due to him being a long time and well respected session musician and that got him the connections...........

The key to this is in session work ad who was passing through the building or the circle of friends when X was recording Y and needed a this player or that player................Often the folk circuit had the musicians who had payed their dues and could a a moment's notice add the required bit....
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

Here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYwUh2dliQ8

Now this is three people Bowie vocals.............Marc Bolan electric guitar and Chris Simpson acoustic guitar THe Bell backing is an imitation of Chris's guitar style ( The plucked harmonies that are his signature)
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

A few ideas:

- Richard Thompson made some excellent albums with Fairport Convention
- Pentangle, but I'm only really familiar with Basket of Light. Featured a couple of very talented guitarists in John Renbourn, & Bert Jansch
- Roy Harper himself is a brilliant, if inconsistent, Folkie. He sang Have a Cigar on Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here album

The Fairports, & Pentangle are Folk-Rock bands with the balance closer to traditional Folk than, say, early Jethro Tull.

^ Those are all basically just progressive folk artists

Gentle Giant have used a lot of renissance-style folk in their music. I don't really like it (love their rock stuff, not the folk stuff) but it fits the description

Sting - Songs From The Labyrinth - maybe you can get into it - I sure as hell can't. I have the CD - played it once and decided I am never listening to that ever again. But to answer your original question - Genesis.

Somewhere between right and wrong there is a garden. I will meet you there - Rumi
