Mxing live drumkits?
#1
Is there anyone on the site with any experience in mixing live drumkits. i.e. No VST's or samplers. A drumkit recorded with 10 mics in a small drum studio.
Snare
Bottom Snare
Two overheads ( left and right)
2 top toms
2 floor toms
Kick
Hi hat

Would be curious to see what sort of reverb yuo have used and what your EQ settings are for each element of the kit.

Also curious as to what your overall levels are relative to each other and what compression, if any, you are using. Stereo widths would also help.

Thx!

I was sorely tempted to reply with reference to flange levels and reverb settings, but I haven't a clue what they are so would have been found out really easily...

Found this plug-in called SPL Transient Designer. Found it after watching a video featuring Simon Phillips on the APP 'Art & Science of Sound Recording' website. Amazing piece of software - excellent for mixing drums. Well worth the 99 bucks.

And another question - has anyone on the site ever used drum replacement software? Does it really do the job properly or is it a sham? Considering purchasing SPL's DrumXchanger to replace a dud floor tom.

I can't post absolutely everything I know, but here's a rough guide. I set the overheads at about 45% (60% is the max) left and right. EQ is different for all kits and rooms, you'll have to have a look at what people are saying on the net and experiment, and pick out what works for you. Generally the less compression the better I think, some on the kick is fine but I'd leave it off the snare. You could put some comp very lightly on a bus covering the whole kit, to mesh the kit together, but the amount you apply depends on the sound and style. Depending on the room, a touch of reverb on the snare is all you need in that department. If the room isn't any good, you'll have to have a go at creating the "illusion" of a great room by messing around with various effects, delays and compression. The most important thing is to have fun with it!

Thx for the info - looking at my setup, it's very similar to your recommendations so I am 'in the ballpark' so to speak.
