Do you think that there is too much music today ?
#1
I feel totally overwhelmed at times with all the music available today ! My queque of CDs to listen to is a mile (kilometre) long. I liked Music Head's reply to the Most Played Albums post. Basically listen to it and that's it...if I've misquoted you MH. please let us know.

Sometimes I feel like just going back in time and listening to the familiar rock classics, but that bores me quickly after a few listens. I gained a lot of knowledge looking at all of your music lists through various posts and therefore I have an immense catalogue to explore with so little time....only so many hours in a day !

How do you get through all the music out there without becoming overwhelmed ? We can't possibly listen to it all...do you listen to a few random tracks and say Yeah or Nay or do you listen to the entire CD ? I have tried the entire CD route and sometimes ( not from your lists) I find it painfully boring and say to myself please end, please.
Even if I said Yeah to a new CD...like today's discovery - TV on the Radio - Nine Types of Light...I loved this album because it was simple good rock and reminded me of Bowie. But will I play it again...maybe once and two if it's lucky.

A friend of mine, Fred, said that he looked at it this way - it's overwhelming but exciting ! Maybe that's the best way to look at it and chill out a bit. I don't feel pressured to listen to something new I just think I'll miss a great one that got away if I only listen to some !

i dont think there is too much music available, i try to listen to as much as i can, especially recommendations from members here and a couple of people i know who have some sort of musical interest.

if i find a track i like i backtrack and listen to other tracks by that artist, if it moves me enough i have no hesitation in buying one of their cd's, even if it is a "best of" set as an introduction.

i also make a point of finding out who my favourite artists listen to see who is/has influenced them, some of which i like, others i dont. i'd rather listen to 9 crap bands to find the 10th one good than be totally stuck in the past.

That's exactly what happened to me yesterday ! I listened to about 10 cds and the one that grabbed me was TV on the Radio - Nine Types of Light.

I've come to the conclusion that I don't have time to replay anything so that I can try to like it !

I don't play much the second time around. Keep it or forget about it.

Your point's a good one Steve.

There is a huge amount of music out there, and it's always expanding. The best I can hope to do is pick up on some of the good stuff from both the past, and current day. This place alone generates enough leads to keep me investigating. Even then I need to ration the time I spend investigating, cos, well, I actually have a life to live...

I was conscious of this last night when leafing through the reviews section of a Mojo magazine (I'm about six months behind with the magazines). I can only really scan the reviews that are 4 stars or above, and discard most of them unless they look particularly interesting.

My Buy List currently includes 96 artists...

i occasionally buy Mojo, mainly for interviews and only buy it something takes my fancy.

used to be a big fan of NME when it was more like a paper than the magazine look it now has, i just go to their online site now to read reviews.

sometimes buy Record Collector also if they do a feature on someone im interested in.

I think the secret to how we have consumed so much music in our time lies within who we are and what we do.

Being in Middle age I have since the early days of my life been drawn to things that have allowed me to listen to music:
In my youth I was able to work in radio and have access to many records and the people who are involved in the musical choices for programing................Then I worked in nightclubs and have to find music that people wanted to hear.................

I went on to be involved in working in record libraries in my spare time and became a keen record collector..............

Later I worked with friends on records fairs and was able to see and hear many rare and obscure things.

I have had good friendships with professional musicians and have been able to asak about their influences ...............

I have a stepson who is into music and is a musician

I read the music press both on the web and on paper and watch what I can on the TV

So I guess that is the kind of profile that many of the regulars on MD have and how we come to have such a great exposure to music...............CoolCool:biggrin::biggrin:
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

Sometimes...not often, I wish I had gone to Ryerson University in Toronto in 1971 to receive training in radio and television and eventually become a DJ !

Music has been a lifelong passion for me. I always had music on when I worked in the Marine industry.

A lot of my spare time aside from raising a beautiful family with my not so as musicky wife, was devoted to researching music and discovering new artists and keeping abreast of the current music scene.

As I mentioned before I experienced for some strange reason a "music listener's slump". I thought it was all boring and nothing grabbed my attention not even my beloved rock classics ! I think in retrospect I had a considerable amount of work stress...striving for more money and promotions as I was heading for the ten year mark before retirement.

A very close friend of mine ,and still is, told me that part of the reason I didn't enjoy music as much was that I didn't drink anymore (a personal choice of mine). He was right to a certain extent because I was always a little happy after a few brews listening to tunes or going to clubs on the weekend. That was a small part of it more out of habit than anything. I think I became a sort of music snob and thought I knew all the good music and there was no new music left to listen to that was worthy of what I already knew..if that makes any sense.

Then one day I met an old school chum who as I recall was a good guitarist, I asked him if he could teach me guitar, something simple you know, the major chords - G,D,C then E, F etc. I learned about six chords well enough to sound decent...not professional mind you..far away from that. I started to get intereted in nomenclatures and tabluture whereby I could pick out a melody good or bad by using a progression scale of a few notes that my friend (Henry) taught me. I bought a half decent guitar, a beautiful Norman Canadian made acoustic with a nice cutaway. I am still tempted to get an electric ,,maybe soon !

Actually learning some aspects of a musical instrument naturally snapped me out of my "music coma". I was starving for new songs to try out and now I was back again to music listening. This was about 1996 so I've been NON-music Free for 15 years ! I mentioned on MD or in a PM that the first song I learned from start to finish was NY's Only Love Can Break Your Heart !

I believe that I became apathetic to listening to music and had to start making music!!!!

So that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Oh no, get out the hankies, Oprah ! lol

what a dumb ass, me dammit, me
I never did respond to this excellent post.
And now that I've put it off (not intentionaly) not only do I have to comment on the original post, but everything after.
How am I supposed to do all this: watch some news, the days album review, listen to something new, watch the video top 20 (recorded), PM CH, check on the cows, read my book, listen to old music.
Life's just too short
That reminds me, I haven't listened to my edited Too Short cd in a long time.
dumb asses, who wants to hear a damn cd that gets bleeped about every 15 seconds. what's the point of that?
I have to make up my own dirty words to insert
