Wikileaks

Leaving Julian Assange aside, is this practice exposing The Man, and giving Joe Public a glimpse of the truth? or is it a reckless act of treason?

I feel that if the powers-that-be are so upset at the truth being revealed, they are maybe losing touch with what's required of them in public service. I realise this may not be a popular view...

Can't see this having a happy ending.

could be a touchy one, but I'm game

forget his country of citizenship, but it's not here, so I dont see how anything could be done from here.
don't really understand this story.
Not sure how anyone could go after him anyway.
He is not the source of the leaks.
All I've ever heard, that gets rare mention, is some low level PFC, whose name I forget, is the source.
Then I can't figure out how that person could have gotten that much info.
Shouldn't that be the guy anyone would go after?

follow up please

As far as the U.S. governments claim that the information being released could possibly damage international relations, I can see their point. If you got one guy calling another guy a name, in a conversation that he believes is private, that could tend to upset the other fellow. People are people wherever you go.

Assange is an Australian "journalist", who owns the Wikileaks site.

Bradley Manning is the leaker. Only 23 with huge security clearance for one so young. He's currently held in solitary confinement in the US, and faces 52 years behind bars !!

Regarding your next post, I understand the sensitivity of information that could endanger people, but views that world leaders have of each other is fair game in my view. What are of more interest are the documents detailing undisclosed wrong-doing from the US forces in Afghanistan, and those outlining the fact that Pakistan & India are both collaborating and supporting the Taliban despite receiving financial support from the US.

This sort of thing belongs in the public domain IMV.

This is a sensitive one ........Here in NL we have access to several versions of what is going on................

What's most interesting is what is being reported and by whom

The story and its contents seems to vary depending upon which set of journalists you look at, and how they see what the risks are and the damage they can do.

NL and Germany , Belgium and France seem to regard it as a minor story but have covered the substance of the leaks ............the main slant here is the rape charges on Assage.

No one is really surprised about what diplomats say in private and there are few mentions of European diplomats or leaders anyway..................To be honest there are no revelations .............we all know plenty about their private interchanges if we care to look......there are not many secrets on that front...................

What is interesting is the level of sensationalism that seems to be associated with the BBC coverage.....................?????????? Here the story has such a different profile to everywhere else.

The CNN approach we are familiar with and is to be expected ..................

The Arabic front seem mildly annoyed but what the hell they have been seen to have egged people on to solve their problems

However it seems that some areas are concerned with finding a scape goat for exposing he fact that many people in high places say things that might not be politically correct !Cool
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

personally, i believe in what Wikileaks has done,is doing and will continue to do....and that is to expose the truth. Governments should IMO be open and accountable to the country they serve...if Wikileaks was around in 1947 the UFO coverup of Roswell,New Mexico would be out for all to see, i believe now, according to our latest news broadcasts that Wikileaks is about to expose underhand dealings of the corporate banking sector in the US and several other countries.

it is not Wikileaks or its founder who should be hunted down and made to stand trial but the person/persons responsible for leaking classified information.

as for JA's rape charge, he needs to have his day in court to either prove his innocence or guilt, then again that could just be an attempt by the USA to discredit him and get him out of the way in a kangaroo court setup.

i dont see how Wikileaks can be silenced, but if it is,there will be others who will start up another website somewhere, someday.

agree with all you said, except I won't go along with that 3rd paragraph.
the U.S. had nothing to do with his arrest, until proven otherwise.

...call me suspicious of the CIA if you want, but after everything they did to try to get John Lennon out of the US it wouldnt surprise me if they were behind it, but of course there will never be any paper trail implicating them.

from what ive seen and heard over the last week i doubt Julian Assange will have his day in court...everyone seems to have a strong opinion about him and/or Wikileaks so to find an impartial jury will be extremely difficult to say the least.
even the media here is split over what they think of him....personally, i agree with Wikileaks releasing information but on the other hand if he has committed the disgusting act of rape he needs to be held accountable.
