Named after a 1984 Coil single, How to Destroy Angels features Nine Inch Nailsâ Trent Reznor, former West Indian Girl singer (and Reznorâs wife) Mariqueen Maandig and Atticus Ross. Work on the project began a few months after Nine Inch Nailsâ final show in September 2009, and the following spring, the group made their debut with the digital single A Drowning and a video for the song âThe Space in Between,â which premiered on pitchfork.com that May. Soon after, the band made their self-titled debut EP â which was produced by Ross, also NINâs longtime co-producer â available as a free download. That July, How to Destroy Angels was released on CD through the Null label.

Itâs hard to deny the influence of Trent Reznor on How to Destroy Angels, the group featuring the Nine Inch Nails mastermind, his wife Mariqueen Maandig, and his longtime collaborator Atticus Ross but HTDA isnât quite NIN fronted by a female. Maandigâs presence isnât incidental; having her as the focal point shifts the tone considerably, giving the music a dreamy quality even when things get quite gnarled and ugly, as they do on âParasite.â Draped in twisted, processed guitar gunk, âParasiteâ is recognizably Reznorâs, as is the electro-throb of âFur Lined,â and the ominous undertow of âBBB,â but HTDAâs debut EP doesnât consist of dressed-up leftovers from The Slip: some of Reznorâs obsessions remain recognizable, but having collaborators opens up the music and Maandig softens it, giving this EP a different feel despite some familiar sounds.
