I just recently moved my drummer's kit into my basement for practice...

and I decided it might be fun to try drumming...

and I was right.

I am pretty good, too. That's what you get for playing Rock Band every day, I guess =]

Does anyone else play/dabble in drums?

Oh I went through my 'Keith Moon' period. Fortunately I didn't have the money to buy a new kit after I smashed the first one up! My mother continues to celebrate that particular day every year.

For anyone considering buying equipment for a home gym - try a drum kit instead - it's more of a workout, your brain has to work as well and it's a lot of fun too. And the new electronic kits (silent/headphones etc) mean the neighbours won't be calling the cops either.

beyond my comprehension but silent drums sound kind of pointless

Sorry that should have been drums that other people in the house (or the neighbours) cannot hear. In silent mode you are listening to your efforts through headphones.

You can also buy the Billy Gladstone style (Vintage Ludwig Drums version - new ones out there not under that name but a knowlegable drum seller will know exactly what you are talking about) rubber pads that sit on the top of you skins - dampen things nicely and still give a reasonable drum response. The neighbors will appreciate that they have no idea you are playing your drums after hours.

I've been playing for twelve years. If it wasn't for the small bedroom at my parents' house where I started out, I wouldn't have anywhere to play! It's a Godsend, not having to go to a rehearsal room to have a wallop.

I've had a kinda crappy kit in my garage for 3+ years now. Unfortunately, my schedule since high school started has nearly stopped my progress.

That's hysterical! I know a 3 year old who plays very well, though visiting with him and his family was trying. They got him a real kit but the kid can keep a beat.

I can imagine! At least he can keep a beat, though. When I took up the saxophone, my family hated me for about three months when I passed into the tolerable category. I'd imagine that they'd hate me if I was as good as Neil Peart if I played drums!
