THE WATERBOYS ~ All Souls Hill

There’s always something otherworldly about what Mike Scott brings to the party. He’s a little fey if you ask me! And even if you don’t ?.

There’s also a persistent drive on this one – a restlessness or urgency. Pretty much another vehicle to express the experience of the artist over this past while. So incredibly interesting how differently they all manifest. Naturally, as we’re all different – fascinating to me though – how personalities come very much to the fore - true colours. Not a bad thing!

Mr Scott has a helluva’n imagination that’s for sure – feels as though he is unfettered by any form of convention – capricious I think is the word. Could also be a flight of fancy on my part, but I’d be very surprised if anyone found this gentleman easy to pin down! He certainly has panache - another clever boy.

There are a variety of sounds and moods on this album – I like it. From almost vaudevillian in parts, to good and angry and then lyrical and swoony in others. One would need to get to know it – not something to be absorbed in one sitting. A certain track really stands out for me – not because of the sounds, but because of the content. It’s a spoken word track and the first line is “Ever since I was a child, I have been able to fly in my dreams…” and that was me sold – because it is true for me – not entirely as per his descriptions, obviously, but I can totally relate to a few of the scenarios. Anyone else?? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5jo42JQrR0

The title track …

"The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that it has never tried to contact us." ~ Bill Watterson
