RAILROAD EARTH ~ All For The Song
My favourite newgrassers have a new release – whoop! Had to get past the first coupla tracks to start enjoying this album though. Literally. The first two did zippity for me which was a bit distressing considering I have flown their flag somewhat. Then we moved on to “It’s So Good” which really channels Bob Dylan if you can imagine him a little more animated, with a more melodic vocal and a very cheerful horn section - not to mention a prominent organ – no – don’t go there all you masters of innuendo! LOL! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYCVauXctbA
That was followed by “Showers of Rain” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEPc_oTyNYw - which is serendipitous since I’ve been talking about the stuff – also a good track but the one after that went back to shambling. This album appears to be quite loose by comparison to others I’ve heard – a tad directionless. Shame as they are good musicians. They are also perhaps better known as a jam band - hmm – nothing horrible and unlistenable but on balance half the tracks on here make the grade, for me – that I’d want to hear again. I’m sorry about that, as the band seems so lovely, in my imagining. Maybe I'll try again - these are first impressions.
“My Favourite Spot” is a goodie – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsJkghB7TCY
As is “Driftin (The Bardo)” which is the pièce de résistance, IMHO … marvellous – wish they’d do more like it …
The title track also passes muster - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSLew-3Ba98
