Steve Lukather and the other members of the original Toto lineup were studio session musicians before they formed Toto. That's where they learned their craft. I would love to know what they have earned in royalties from just the track 'Africa' alone, never mind all their other hits.

i used to work on a building site with a guy called Tony Hayes, he was one of the guys who wrote Los Bravos hit "black is black" back in the 1960s.
when i knew him back in the late 80s to early 90s he told me he was receiving royalty cheques of around AU-80K annually.

was reading an interview involving Noddy Holder from Slade a couple of years ago and he was talking about the song "merry xmas everybody" and how it came to be written. basically his mum told him that "pop songs are a dime a dozen, once theyre out of the charts thats it, no more sales and very little airplay, what you need is a song that will sell year in-year out like 'white christmas'".
he ended up saying that was the best advice he ever got because he wrote the song and earns 200K (pounds sterling) from it every year like clockwork.

so i think the royalties from Africa would be quite a bit more than those.
